This saw him break into the top 100 for the first time. He was also runner-up in the [Austrian Open](/source/Austrian_Open_Kitzb%C3%BChel), with partner [Pablo Arraya](/source/Pablo_Arraya). These would be the only two [ATP Tour](/source/ATP_Tour) finals that he reached during his career.

In 1993 he made it into the semi-finals of the [Kremlin Cup](/source/1993_Kremlin_Cup_%E2%80%93_Singles), as qualifier. He defeated number three seed [Amos Mansdorf](/source/Amos_Mansdorf) in the opening round and then best [Zimbabwe](/source/Zimbabwe)an [Byron Black](/source/Byron_Black) 6–0, 6–3 and [Martin Damm](/source/Martin_Damm) of the [Czech Republic](/source/Czech_Republic). His tournament ended when he was defeated by [Marc Rosset](/source/Marc_Rosset) in three sets.<ref>[http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/players/dimitri-poliakov/p198/overview APT Tour Profile]</ref>

He had one of the best wins of his career in 1992 when he defeated world number 12 [Carlos Costa](/source/Carlos_Costa_(tennis)) [in Vienna](/source/Erste_Bank_Open) in straight sets.

From 1993 to 1998, Poliakov was a regular fixture in the [Ukraine Davis Cup team](/source/Ukraine_Davis_Cup_team). He had a 10–2 record in singles. His doubles record was 9–5 and seven of those wins came with [Andrei Medvedev](/source/Andrei_Medvedev_(tennis)), which is a national record. He had also played in two [Davis Cup](/source/Davis_Cup) campaigns for the [Soviet Union team](/source/Russia_Davis_Cup_team) in 1990 and 1991.<ref>[http://www.daviscup.com/en/players/player/profile.aspx?playerid=10001113 Davis Cup Profile]</ref>
