'''Drietabbetje''' (or '''Diitabiki'''; [Sranan Tongo](/source/Sranan_Tongo): ''Dritabiki'', [Dutch](/source/Dutch_language): ''Drietabbetje'') is a [Ndyuka](/source/Ndyuka_people) village in the [Sipaliwini District](/source/Sipaliwini_District) of [Suriname](/source/Suriname). Diitabiki is the residence of the [gaanman](/source/gaanman) of the [Ndyuka people](/source/Ndyuka_people), since 1950, and the location of the [oracle](/source/oracle).<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.dbnl.org/tekst/kemp009gesc02_01/kemp009gesc02_01_0015.php|title=Een geschiedenis van de Surinaamse literatuur. Deel 2|website=Digital Library for Dutch Literature|access-date=21 May 2020|date=2002|language=nl}}</ref>

== Name ==
Both the [Ndyuka](/source/Ndyuka_language) and [Sranan Tongo](/source/Sranan_Tongo) name for the village translates to "three islands," with the word ''tabiki'' meaning "island" in both languages.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://taalschrift.org/editie/81/zonder-het-nederlands-waren-we-pas-echt-ge-soleerd|title=Zonder het Nederlands waren we pas echt geïsoleerd|language=nl|website=Taalschrift|access-date=22 May 2020}}</ref> While ''drie'' indeed also translates as "three" in the [Dutch language](/source/Dutch_language), the word ''tabbetje'' is a [homophonic translation](/source/homophonic_translation) of the Ndyuka word.

==History==
The Ndyuka people are of [Africa](/source/Africa)n descent, and were shipped as slaves to Suriname in the 17-18th century to work on [Dutch](/source/Netherlands)-owned colonial plantations. The escaped slaves moved into the [rainforest](/source/rainforest), and banded together.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.mpm.edu/research-collections/anthropology/online-collections-research/ndyuka|title=Suriname and the Maroons|website=Milwaukee Public Museum|access-date=23 May 2020}}</ref> There were frequent clashes between the colonists and the Ndyuka, however in 1760, a peace treaty was signed granting the Ndyuka autonomy.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.culturalsurvival.org/publications/cultural-survival-quarterly/ndyuka-treaty-1760-conversation-granman-gazon|title=The Ndyuka Treaty Of 1760: A Conversation with Granman Gazon|website=Cultural Survival|access-date=23 May 2020}}</ref> From 1761 onwards, the Ndyuka gradually moved southwards in order to protected themselves from the [colonists](/source/Surinam_(Dutch_colony)), and started to build villages on the [Tapanahoni River](/source/Tapanahoni_River) dispelling the indigenous [Tiriyó](/source/Tiriy%C3%B3_people). Diitabiki is one of the villages. Slaves who had recently fled from Armina and Boven Commewijne were stationed near the confluence of the Tapanahoni and [Lawa River](/source/Lawa_River_(South_America)) to guard against attacks by the [Aluku](/source/Aluku).<ref name="encycl">{{Cite web|title=Encyclopaedie van Nederlandsch West-Indië - Page 154 - Boschnegers|website=[Digital Library for Dutch Literature](/source/Digital_Library_for_Dutch_Literature)|url=https://www.dbnl.org/tekst/benj004ency01_01/benj004ency01_01.pdf|date=1916|access-date=22 May 2020|language=nl}}</ref>

== Education ==
Since the 1960s, Diitabiki is home to the Granman [Akontoe Velantie](/source/Akontoe_Velantie) [primary school](/source/primary_school), which as of 2015 has 333 pupils.<ref name="Starnews">{{cite news |last=Alendy |first=Cythia |date=14 October 2015 |title=School Dritabiki nog steeds gesloten |url=http://www.starnieuws.com/index.php/welcome/index/nieuwsitem/31726 |newspaper=Starnews |access-date=18 April 2016}}</ref> In 2015, volunteers from Diitabiki and its surroundings extended the school with an extra classroom.<ref name="DWT">{{cite news |author=<!--Staff writer(s); no by-line.--> |date=14 October 2015 |title=Dorpelingen Drietabbetje bouwen leslokaal bij school |url=http://dwtonline.com/laatste-nieuws/2015/10/25/dorpelingen-drietabbetje-bouwen-leslokaal-bij-school/ |newspaper=[de Ware Tijd](/source/de_Ware_Tijd) |access-date=18 April 2016 |archive-date=5 May 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160505012905/http://dwtonline.com/laatste-nieuws/2015/10/25/dorpelingen-drietabbetje-bouwen-leslokaal-bij-school/ |url-status=dead }}</ref>

== Healthcare ==
Diitabiki is home to a [Medische Zending](/source/Medische_Zending) healthcare centre.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.medischezending.sr/mz/zorggebied/|title=Zorggebied|website=Medische Zending.sr|access-date=22 May 2020|language=nl|archive-date=30 September 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220930070719/http://www.medischezending.sr/mz/zorggebied/|url-status=dead}}</ref>

== Energy ==
Between 1985 and 1987, electricity was provided by an [overhead power line](/source/overhead_power_line) connected to the [Puketi hydroelectric power plant](/source/Puketi_hydroelectric_power_plant).{{sfn|Van Els|2012|p=284}} After this power plant stopped working during the [Surinamese Interior War](/source/Surinamese_Interior_War) there have been attempts to rehabilitate the facility, but after a university delegation in 2003 and 2004 investigated the possibilities for hydroelectric power in the region, the Ministry for Regional Development decided to instead fund the construction of a larger [hydroelectric power plant at the Gran Olo rapids](/source/Gran_Olo_hydroelectric_power_plant) nearby.{{sfn|Van Els|2012|pp=285-286}} Although it will initially only power [Puketi](/source/Puketi) and [Futupasi](/source/Futupasi), the plan is to eventually connect Diitabiki to the grid as well. As of 2016, the Gran Olo power plant is still under construction.<ref name="Obsession magazine 2014-10">{{cite news |author=<!--Staff writer(s); no by-line.--> |title=Zoveelste vertraging oplevering miniwaterkrachtcentrale Gran Olo Sula – Eén transformator ongeschikt voor stroomleverantie |url=http://obsession-magazine.nl/?p=72204 |newspaper=Obsession Magazine |date= 11 October 2014 |access-date= 26 April 2016}}</ref>
