# Diggle, Greater Manchester

**Diggle** is a village in the civil [parish](/source/Parish) of [Saddleworth](/source/Saddleworth), in the [Metropolitan Borough of Oldham](/source/Metropolitan_Borough_of_Oldham), [Greater Manchester](/source/Greater_Manchester), England.[1] It lies on the moorlands of the [Pennine](/source/Pennines) hills.

## History

The name *Diggle* comes from the [Saxon](/source/Old_English) word *degle* meaning "valley".[2] Like many of Saddleworth's villages, it traces its history back to a collection of [hamlets](/source/Hamlet_(place)).

The Gate [pub](/source/Public_house) and a [post office](/source/Post_office)/[off-licence](/source/Off-licence) is a [listed building](/source/Listed_building).

## Location

[Historically](/source/Historic_counties_of_England) part of the [West Riding of Yorkshire](/source/West_Riding_of_Yorkshire), it is located at one end of the restored [Standedge Canal Tunnel](/source/Standedge_Tunnels), Britain's longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel.

## Transport

[Diggle railway station](/source/Diggle_railway_station) served the village between 1849 and 1968; the [Huddersfield Line](/source/Huddersfield_Line) continues to pass through the former station site.[3] The nearest [National Rail](/source/National_Rail) station is now at , where [TransPennine Express](/source/TransPennine_Express) provides services between , , and .[4]

Diggle is served by two bus routes:[5]

- 184 is run by [Stagecoach Manchester](/source/Stagecoach_Manchester) between [Oldham](/source/Oldham) and [Huddersfield](/source/Huddersfield)
- 356 is operated by [Diamond North West](/source/Diamond_North_West), which runs between Oldham and [Ashton-under-Lyne](/source/Ashton-under-Lyne), via [Denshaw](/source/Denshaw), [Uppermill](/source/Uppermill), [Greenfield](/source/Greenfield,_Greater_Manchester), [Mossley](/source/Mossley) and [Stalybridge](/source/Stalybridge).

## Sport

Diggle is home to Diggle F.C., an FA-registered amateur football club, which plays its home games at Churchill playing fields in [Uppermill](/source/Uppermill). It competes in the [Huddersfield and District Association Football League](/source/Huddersfield_and_District_Association_Football_League).

Saddleworth Clarion Cycling Club hosts the annual Beard Cup Hill Climb out of Diggle each September.[citation needed]
