"'''Different Colors'''" is a song written and recorded by American [rock](/source/Rock_music) band [Walk the Moon](/source/Walk_the_Moon) for their second studio album, ''[Talking Is Hard](/source/Talking_Is_Hard)'' (2014). The song was released to US [alternative radio](/source/alternative_radio) stations by [RCA Records](/source/RCA_Records) as the album's second [single](/source/Single_(music)) on May 5, 2015. Described as an [alternative rock](/source/alternative_rock), [electropop](/source/electropop), [indie rock](/source/indie_rock), and [pop](/source/Pop_music) song, it is lyrically about celebrating and embracing each other's differences by speaking out against discrimination of any kind.

Some [music critics](/source/Music_journalism) gave "Different Colors" praise for its [chorus](/source/Refrain) and production; others felt it was a step down from the band's earlier singles. The song peaked at number seven on the [''Billboard''](/source/Billboard_(magazine)) [Alternative Songs](/source/Alternative_Songs) chart, becoming Walk the Moon's third top ten track on the chart. A [music video](/source/music_video) for the song was released on June 11, 2015, featuring footage of the band touring with colorful visuals. The song was performed live by Walk the Moon at award shows, including the [2015 MTV Video Music Awards](/source/2015_MTV_Video_Music_Awards). It was included on the setlist for the band's Talking Is Hard Tour (2015) and was used in campaigns of [Pepsi](/source/Pepsi), [AT&T](/source/AT%26T) & [Apple](/source/Apple_Inc.).<ref>{{Cite web |date=2015-07-02 |title=Apple Posts 'Pride 2015' Video |url=https://www.iclarified.com/50194/apple-posts-pride-2015-video |access-date=2022-10-22 |website=iClarified |language=en}}</ref>

Lead vocalist Nicholas Petricca stated that the song addresses "any part of this world that is diverse and sometimes struggles to be treated with a sense of normalcy".<ref name="CNET"/> In an interview with ''[Time](/source/Time_(magazine))'' magazine, Petricca commented on how "Different Colors" differed from their previous single "[Shut Up and Dance](/source/Shut_Up_and_Dance_(Walk_the_Moon_song))" by saying that "it shows a different side of [the band] that's equally important", which is "taking this platform [they]'ve got as [the band] get[s] more popular to say something that's meaningful to [them]". He went on to say that the song "is all about not just tolerating each other's differences but celebrating them and embracing them".<ref name="Time">{{cite magazine|url=https://time.com/3933669/walk-the-moon-shut-up-and-dance-song-of-the-summer/|title=Watch Walk the Moon Weigh In on This Year's Songs of the Summer|last1=Feeney|first1=Nolan|last2=Koroma|first2=Salima|magazine=[Time](/source/Time_(magazine))|date=June 25, 2015|access-date=July 1, 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190612040940/http://time.com/3933669/walk-the-moon-shut-up-and-dance-song-of-the-summer/|archive-date=June 12, 2019|url-status=live}}</ref> Maiman also added that it was "a chance for [Walk the Moon] to sort of empower people, especially kids, to have the courage to be themselves and to stand out".<ref name="Vulture">{{cite web|url=https://www.vulture.com/2015/06/walk-the-moon-song-of-summer-interview.html|title=A Chat With Walk the Moon About Their Song of Summer Contender 'Shut Up and Dance'|last=Charlton|first=Lauretta|website=[Vulture](/source/Vulture.com)|date=June 25, 2015|access-date=July 5, 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200706073529/https://www.vulture.com/2015/06/walk-the-moon-song-of-summer-interview.html|archive-date=July 6, 2020|url-status=live}}</ref>

When talking about the inspiration for "Different Colors", Petricca mentioned that while the song "speaks out against discrimination of all kinds, it was the fight for marriage equality that initially inspired the song".<ref name="ABC">{{cite web|url=http://abcnewsradioonline.com/music-news/2015/12/3/walk-the-moon-to-release-different-colors-ep.html|title=WALK THE MOON to Release 'Different Colors' EP|publisher=[ABC News Radio](/source/ABC_News_Radio)|date=December 3, 2015|access-date=July 2, 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200703041837/http://abcnewsradioonline.com/music-news/2015/12/3/walk-the-moon-to-release-different-colors-ep.html|archive-date=July 3, 2020|url-status=live}}</ref> He mentioned being frustrated that news segments were still arguing about [same-sex marriage](/source/same-sex_marriage) and whether people should have equal rights in 2013. Petricca said "it should be second nature at this point" and that the band wanted "to write a victory march and a call to arms for everyone" that is "about equality and love in every way".<ref>{{cite web|url=https://instinctmagazine.com/walk-the-moon-lead-singer-nicholas-petricca-comes-out-as-bisexual/|title=WALK THE MOON Lead Singer, Nicholas Petricca Comes Out As Bisexual|last=Biggerstaff|first=Gerald|work=[Instinct](/source/Instinct_(magazine))|date=July 6, 2020|access-date=July 6, 2020}}</ref>

James Grebey of ''[Spin](/source/Spin_(magazine))'' magazine stated that while the track "doesn't reach the high-highs" of the band's 2012 hit "[Anna Sun](/source/Anna_Sun)", it "achieves a similar feel-good vibe" and praised the catchiness of the song's chorus.<ref name="Spin">{{cite web|url=https://www.spin.com/2014/11/spin-singles-mix-sleigh-bells-tink-asap-ferg-walk-the-moon/|title=SPIN Singles Mix: ASAP Ferg Name-Drops Adam Levine, Sleigh Bells Team With Tink, and More|date=November 19, 2014|work=[Spin](/source/Spin_(magazine))|access-date=August 31, 2020|archive-date=February 1, 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200201234304/https://www.spin.com/2014/11/spin-singles-mix-sleigh-bells-tink-asap-ferg-walk-the-moon/|url-status=live}}</ref> James Christopher Monger of [AllMusic](/source/AllMusic) said that "Different Colors" offers "a nice mix of [Bastille](/source/Bastille_(band))-influenced, swirly electro-pop atmosphere and dense, heavily arpeggiated retro-fitted indie rock".<ref name="AllMusic"/> [''Vulture''](/source/Vulture.com)'s Lauretta Charlton noted that its use of synths and "oooh-e-oooh-e-ooohs" made the song "sound like it was written about 30 years ago", but commented that it was "not a bad thing".<ref name="Vulture"/> Chris DeVille, writing for ''[Stereogum](/source/Stereogum)'', was less enthusiastic towards the song, writing that it "marks a steep decline" from "Shut Up and Dance", but called the chorus "probably strong enough to save Walk the Moon from [one-hit wonder](/source/one-hit_wonder) status".<ref name="Stereogum">{{cite web|url=https://www.stereogum.com/1806759/the-week-in-pop-nate-ruess-went-solo-made-a-fun-album-anyway/franchises/columns/the-week-in-pop/|title=The Week In Pop: Nate Ruess Went Solo, Made A Fun.
