'''''Dictyocha''''' is a genus of [silicoflagellate](/source/silicoflagellate)s, [marine](/source/marine_life) [photosynthetic](/source/photosynthetic) unicellular [protist](/source/protist)s that take the form of either [flagellate](/source/flagellate)s or [axopodia](/source/axopodia)l [amoebae](/source/amoebae). Described by [Ehrenberg](/source/Christian_Gottfried_Ehrenberg) in 1837, ''Dictyocha'' contains many important species of the marine [phytoplankton](/source/phytoplankton), some of them responsible for [algal bloom](/source/algal_bloom)s that are toxic to [fish](/source/fish).<ref name="IGP Silicoflagellata"/>

== Systematics ==

The [genus](/source/genus) ''Dictyocha'' was described in 1837 by [Ehrenberg](/source/Christian_Gottfried_Ehrenberg) from [Algeria](/source/Algeria)n [fossil](/source/fossil) material, and its taxonomy has been based exclusively on the morphology of their [siliceous](/source/siliceous) skeletons.<ref name="Chang 2015"/> ''Dictyocha'' was regarded as the sole genus of the entire family [Dictyochaceae](/source/Dictyochaceae) and order [Dictyochales](/source/Dictyochales) (known as silicoflagellates ''[sensu stricto](/source/sensu_stricto)'')<ref name="IGP Silicoflagellata"/> until 2012, when a second genus ''[Vicicitus](/source/Vicicitus)'' was described.<ref name="Vicicitus"/> There are currently four accepted species of ''Dictyocha'':<ref name="Chang 2015"/>
