Yates played as a guest for [Wrexham](/source/Wrexham_A.F.C.), [Reading](/source/Reading_F.C.), [Charlton Athletic](/source/Charlton_Athletic_F.C.) and [Port Vale](/source/Port_Vale_F.C.) during [World War II](/source/World_War_II).<ref name="kent">{{cite book|last=Kent|first=Jeff|title=Port Vale Personalities|publisher=Witan Books|page=319|year=1996|isbn=0-9529152-0-0}}</ref> After the war he signed with [Frank Brown](/source/Frank_Brown_(footballer%2C_born_1890))'s [Chester](/source/Chester_City_F.C.), and with 36 goals in the [1946–47](/source/1946%E2%80%9347_Football_League) season he set a club record that was never equalled. Despite his efforts, the "Seals" could only finish third in the [Third Division North](/source/Football_League_Third_Division_North) and were not [promoted](/source/Promotion_and_relegation). He left [Sealand Road](/source/Sealand_Road) in the [1947–48](/source/1947%E2%80%9348_Football_League) season and scored 18 goals in 31 league games for [Wrexham](/source/Wrexham_A.F.C.), who also finished third in the Third Division North.
