# Dick Uren

**Richard Uren** (26 February 1926 – 30 May 2010 (aged 84)) was a [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) player who played for [Waterloo R.F.C.](/source/Waterloo_R.F.C.) and represented the [England national rugby union team](/source/England_national_rugby_union_team) four times. He represented [Cheshire](/source/Cheshire) at both rugby union and [golf](/source/Golf) and was also a successful racing sailor.

## Biography

Uren was born at [West Kirby](/source/West_Kirby) on the [Wirral Peninsula](/source/Wirral_Peninsula).[1] His father, [Harold Uren](/source/Harold_Uren_(footballer)), was an [association footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as an amateur for [Liverpool F.C.](/source/Liverpool_F.C.) and as a professional for [Everton F.C.](/source/Everton_F.C.)[1] Dick Uren was the youngest of seven children; one of his brothers, [Harold Uren](/source/Harold_Uren_(rugby_union)), was capped by the British Lions at rugby union.[1]

Uren was educated at [Calday Grange Grammar School](/source/Calday_Grange_Grammar_School)[1] and served as a navigator with the [Fleet Air Arm](/source/Fleet_Air_Arm) in World War 2.[1] After the war he went to the Midlands Agricultural College[1] before joining the family firm of food merchants, H. J. Uren & Sons.[1] He worked for the firm until he retired in 1986 and continued to go to the office until two days before his death.[1] Uren married his wife, Diana, in 1962 and they had two sons and a daughter.[1]

## Rugby union career

Dick Uren played for [Waterloo R.F.C.](/source/Waterloo_R.F.C.) He represented the [Cheshire](/source/Cheshire_Rugby_Football_Union) county team and on one occasion kicked a penalty from half-way which put Cheshire into the final of the [County Championship](/source/County_Championship_(rugby_union)), a final which they won.[1] At international level Uren was capped four times by England as a full-back. He played three games in the [1948 Five Nations Championship](/source/1948_Five_Nations_Championship) and one final game in the [1952 Five Nations Championship](/source/1952_Five_Nations_Championship).[2] Uren scored two conversions in his first international and one penalty in his second, for a total of seven points for England.[2] He played for the [Barbarians](/source/Barbarian_F.C.) and was selected for the [1950 British Lions tour to New Zealand and Australia](/source/1950_British_Lions_tour_to_New_Zealand_and_Australia) but turned down the invitation for business reasons.[1]

## Other sports

Uren represented Cheshire at golf between 1966 and reduced his [handicap](/source/Handicap_(golf)) to scratch.[1] As a racing sailor Uren led teams from West Kirby sailing club to win a competition called the Wilson Trophy in 1957 and 1959.[1]
