# Dick Penn

**Alfred Penn** (6 January 1855 – 18 October 1889), known as **Dick Penn**, was an English amateur [cricketer](/source/Cricket) who played for [Kent County Cricket Club](/source/Kent_County_Cricket_Club) from 1875 to 1884.[1]

Penn was born at The Cedars in [Lee](/source/Lee,_London) in what is now south-east London but was historically part of [Kent](/source/Kent). He was the son of [John Penn](/source/John_Penn_(engineer)), a manufacturer of marine engines with works in [Deptford](/source/Deptford) and [Greenwich](/source/Greenwich).[2] His brothers [Frank](/source/Frank_Penn_(cricketer,_born_1851)) and [William](/source/William_Penn_(cricketer)) were both cricketers whilst another brother, [John](/source/John_Penn_(MP)), was the [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament) for [Lewisham](/source/Lewisham_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) from 1891 to 1903.[3]

Penn made his [first-class cricket](/source/First-class_cricket) debut for Kent in July 1875, playing against [Sussex](/source/Sussex_County_Cricket_Club) at [Hove](/source/County_Ground,_Hove).[4] He went on to play a total of 48 first-class matches, 41 of which were for Kent.[3]

Penn died at Lee in October 1889 at the age of 34.[5]
