# Dick Hodder

**Bramwell William** "**Dick**" **Hodder** (15 November 1923 – 12 September 2006) was a British [geographer](/source/Geographer) and academic, specialising in [African studies](/source/African_studies).

Having served in the [British Army](/source/British_Army) during the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War), he studied geography at [Oriel College, Oxford](/source/Oriel_College,_Oxford) and the [University of London](/source/University_of_London). He then began a long academic career stretching across three continents: he was a [lecturer](/source/Lecturer) at the [University of Malaya in Singapore](/source/National_University_of_Singapore) (1952–1956), the [University of Ibadan](/source/University_of_Ibadan) in Nigeria (1956–1963), the [University of Glasgow](/source/University_of_Glasgow) in Scotland (1963–1964), before joining [Queen Mary College](/source/Queen_Mary_College), University of London in England in 1964 as a [Reader](/source/Reader_(academic_rank)). He moved to the University of London's [School of Oriental and African Studies](/source/School_of_Oriental_and_African_Studies) in 1970 as Professor of Geography, retiring in 1983 and being appointed [emeritus professor](/source/Emeritus_professor).[1][2]

Hodder was married three times. Among his five children and two step-daughters is the archaeologist and academic [Ian Hodder](/source/Ian_Hodder).[2][3]
