The **Dicastery for Communication** ([Latin](/source/Latin_language): *Dicasterium pro Communicatione*, [Italian](/source/Italian_language): *Dicastero per la Comunicazione*) is a department ([dicastery](/source/Dicastery)) of the [Roman Curia](/source/Roman_Curia) with authority over all communication offices of the [Holy See](/source/Holy_See) and the [Vatican City State](/source/Vatican_City_State). Its various offices can be accessed through its website. These are the [Pope](/source/Pope)'s website and other offices such as [Vatican News](/source/Vatican_News) on the internet (including the former [Vatican Media](/source/Vatican_Media) Center that distributes segments for television), the [Holy See Press Office](/source/Holy_See_Press_Office), *[L'Osservatore Romano](/source/L'Osservatore_Romano)* newspaper, the Photograph Service, [Vatican Radio](/source/Vatican_Radio), [Vatican Press](/source/Vatican_Press) [[it](https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tipografia_poliglotta_vaticana)], and the [Vatican Publishing House](/source/Vatican_Publishing_House). The [Pontifical Council for Social Communications](/source/Pontifical_Council_for_Social_Communications) has been subsumed into this new dicastery.

## History

[Pope Francis](/source/Pope_Francis) established the **Secretariat for Communication** in June 2015,[1][2] with Monsignor [Dario Edoardo Viganò](/source/Dario_Edoardo_Vigan%C3%B2), former director of the Vatican Television Center, as its first prefect.[3] Viganò resigned on 21 March 2018, "a week after his mishandling of a letter from retired [Pope Benedict XVI](/source/Pope_Benedict_XVI) provoked a global outcry".[4]

On 23 June 2018, the secretariat was renamed as the Dicastery for Communication,[5] and on 5 July 2018, Pope Francis appointed award-winning lay journalist [Paolo Ruffini](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Paolo_Ruffini_(journalist)&action=edit&redlink=1) as prefect. He was the first layman named to head a Vatican dicastery.[6] Ruffini also chairs the Commission for Information of the [Sixteenth Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops](/source/Sixteenth_Ordinary_General_Assembly_of_the_Synod_of_Bishops).[7]

Monsignor [Lucio Adrian Ruiz](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lucio_Adrian_Ruiz&action=edit&redlink=1), former head of the Vatican Internet Service, is Secretary of the Dicastery and [Paul Nusiner](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Paul_Nusiner&action=edit&redlink=1), former [General Manager](/source/General_Manager) of *[Avvenire](/source/Avvenire)*, is Director General.[1][8]
