Jones was born '''Richard Lewis Jones''' at [Tre'r-ddôl](/source/Tre'r-dd%C3%B4l) in [Ceredigion](/source/Ceredigion).<ref name="BBCObit"/> The son of a [farmer](/source/farmer), he himself farmed {{convert|85|acres|ha}} at Fferm yr Hendre at [Blaenannerch](/source/Blaenannerch) in [Aberporth](/source/Aberporth). In commenting upon his life, he remarked, "I farm for bread and butter; I write for some jam on it."

Jones began his literary career as a competitor in the [Urdd](/source/Urdd) eisteddfod, where, as an exponent of [cynghanedd](/source/cynghanedd), he won the chair five times in his twenties.<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.britannia.com/wales/lit/lit18.html |title=GO BRITANNIA! Wales: Welsh Literature – 20th Century, Pt III}}</ref> In 1966 he won the [Chair](/source/Chairing_of_the_Bard) at the National Eisteddfod with an ''awdl'' entitled "Cynhaeaf" (meaning harvest).

He officiated at the 2008 event in [Cardiff](/source/Cardiff), but missed the 2009 event in [Bala](/source/Bala%2C_Gwynedd) due to ill health.<ref name="BBCObit"/>
