**Diarmaid** (ˈdʲiəɾˠmˠədʲ) is a masculine [given name](/source/Given_name) in the [Irish language](/source/Irish_language), which has historically been anglicized as [Jeremiah](/source/Jeremiah_(given_name)) or [Jeremy](/source/Jeremy_(name)), names with which it is etymologically unrelated.[1][2] The name [Dimity](/source/Dimity_(given_name)) might have been used as a feminine English equivalent of the name in Ireland.[3] Earlier forms of the name include **Diarmit** and **Diarmuit**. Variations of the name include **Diarmait** and **Diarmuid**. [Anglicised](/source/Anglicised) forms of the name include **Dermody**, **Dermot** (/ˈdɜːrmət/, [Hiberno-English](/source/Hiberno-English): /ˈdɛərmət/) and **Dermod**. [Mac Diarmata](/source/Mac_Diarmata), anglicised *McDermott* and similar, is the [patronymic](/source/Patronymic) and [surname](/source/Surname) derived from the personal name. The exact [etymology](/source/Etymology) of the name is debated. There is a possibility that the name is derived in part from *dí*, which means "without"; and either from *airmit*, which means "injunction", or *airmait*, which means "envy".[2] The Irish name later spread to Scotland where in [Scottish Gaelic](/source/Scottish_Gaelic) the form of the name is *Diarmad*; Anglicised forms of this name include *Diarmid* and *Dermid*.[4]
