The **dhantara** (or **dhanotu**[1]) is a bowed string instrument found in [Himachal Pradesh](/source/Himachal_Pradesh) state of India. The instrument is similar to the classical [sarangi](/source/Sarangi), but is more primitive, having only three melody strings and no *tarab* ([sympathetic strings](/source/Sympathetic_strings)). The instrument is popular among the [Gaddi people](/source/Gaddi_people) of that state, and often decorated with flowers.[2]
