**Dhani** or **Dhanni** (دھنّی; pronounced [\[ˈd̥ə˥˩n.niː\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Punjabi))[1] is a [western dialect](/source/Punjabi_language#Western_Punjabi) of the [Punjabi language](/source/Punjabi_language) spoken in the southern region of the [Pothohar Plateau](/source/Pothohar_Plateau) in [Punjab](/source/Punjab_(Pakistan)), Pakistan. It is predominantly spoken in the [Chakwal](/source/Chakwal_District) and [Talagang](/source/Talagang_District) districts; as well as in the southern portions of [Attock](/source/Attock_district) and [Jhelum](/source/Jhelum_District) districts. Its name is derived from Dhan valley, located 35 km away from [Rawalpindi](/source/Rawalpindi).[2] It has many subdialects including **Sohāī̃** (سوہائیِں), spoken west of the [Soan River](/source/Soan_River), in the [tehsils](/source/List_of_tehsils_of_Punjab%2C_Pakistan) of [Fateh Jang](/source/Fateh_Jang_Tehsil) and [Pindi Gheb](/source/Pindi_Gheb_Tehsil) in [Attock District](/source/Attock_District).[1]

In the 1920s [G.A. Grierson](/source/G.A._Grierson) in his *[Linguistic Survey of India](/source/Linguistic_Survey_of_India)* called this group North-Western Lahnda.[1] The glotlog code for Dhani:

- dhan1272[3]

Grierson has distinguished three forms of Lahndi:[4]

- North-Western dialects consisting of (Hindko, Sohain, Dhanni, etc.)

- North-Eastern dialects (Pothowari, Chibali, Awankari, Ghebi, etc.)

- Southern Dialects (Shahpuri, Jhangi, Multani, Derawali, Thali, etc.)
