Devhonte M. Johnson was born in [Paterson, New Jersey](/source/Paterson%2C_New_Jersey).<ref name="BJJ Heroes – Devhonte Johnson" /> During his senior year in [Eastside High School](/source/Eastside_High_School_(Paterson%2C_New_Jersey)) he started training [Brazilian jiu-jitsu](/source/Brazilian_jiu-jitsu) (BJJ) under Coach Edson Carvalho with whom he stayed until [purple belt](/source/Brazilian_jiu-jitsu_ranking_system).<ref name="BJJ Heroes – Devhonte Johnson" />
