Element in Hindu temple architecture

For the villages in West Bengal, see [Deula, Magrahat](/source/Deula%2C_Magrahat) and [Deula, Medinipur](/source/Deula%2C_Medinipur).

Simplified schema of a Kalinga architecture temple

**Deula** is an architectural element in a [Hindu temple](/source/Hindu_temple) in the [Kalinga architecture](/source/Kalinga_architecture) style of the [Odishan](/source/Odisha) temples in Eastern India.[1] Sometimes the whole temple is also referred to as *Deula*. The word "deula" in [Odia language](/source/Odia_language) means a building structure built with a particular style that is seen in most of the temples from Odisha.[2] *Deul* is also used in English, though the [deul](/source/Deul) temples are also of a different form in the [Manbhum](/source/Manbhum) region of Western Bengal.

There are three types of *Deulas*:[3] In terms of the general north Indian terminology, the Rekha Deula (rekha deul) is the sanctuary and the tower over it, respectively the [garbhagriha](/source/Garbhagriha) and the [shikhara](/source/Shikhara), the Pidha Deula (pida deul) is the [mandapa](/source/Mandapa) where the faithful are present. The Khakhara deula is an alternative form of tower over the sanctuary, which in shape resembles the oblong [gopuram](/source/Gopuram) temple gatehouses in southern [Dravidian architecture](/source/Dravidian_architecture).

## Rekha Deula

Shantinath Shiva temple at Shihar near [Jayrambati](/source/Jayrambati), West Bengal.

Rekha in Odia means a straight line. It is a tall building with a shape of sugar loaf, looking like a [Shikhara](/source/Shikhara). It covers and protects the sanctum sanctorum ([Garbhagriha](/source/Garbhagriha)). Examples :

- The [Shikhara](/source/Shikhara) of the [Lingaraja Temple](/source/Lingaraja_Temple) in [Bhubaneswar](/source/Bhubaneswar)

- The [Shikhara](/source/Shikhara) of the [Jagannath temple](/source/Jagannath_Temple%2C_Puri) in [Puri](/source/Puri)

- [Jagannath Temple](/source/Jagannath_Temple%2C_Nayagarh) in [Nayagarh](/source/Nayagarh)

## Pidha Deula

[Konark Sun Temple](/source/Konark_Sun_Temple), example of a "pitha deula" (the larger tower behind has fallen down).

It is a square building, typically with a pyramid-shaped roof, rather like the [vimana](/source/Vimana_(architectural_feature)) towers over the sanctuaries of temples in southern [Dravidian architecture](/source/Dravidian_architecture). For the halls or service rooms of the temple. Examples

- The [Jagamohana](/source/Jagamohana) (assembly hall) of the [Sun temple](/source/Sun_temple) in [Konârak](/source/Kon%C3%A2rak)

- The [Jagamohana](/source/Jagamohana) of [Yameshwara Temple](/source/Yameshwar_Temple) in [Bhubaneswar](/source/Bhubaneswar)

## Khakhara deula

[Baitala Deula](/source/Baitala_Deula) example of a "khakara deula".

Khakara deula is a rectangular building with a truncated pyramid-shaped roof, like the [gopuras](/source/Gopura). The name comes from Khakharu (gourd) because of the shape of the roof. The temples of the feminine deities as [Shakti](/source/Shakti) are temple of that type. Examples :

- [Baitala Deula](/source/Baitala_Deula), [Bhubaneswar](/source/Bhubaneswar) (dedicated to [Chamunda](/source/Chamunda))
