# Derrick Schofield

**Derrick Schofield** (4 February 1928 – 25 August 1999) was an English professional [rugby league](/source/Rugby_league) footballer who played in the 1940s and 1950s. He played at representative level for [Great Britain](/source/Great_Britain_national_rugby_league_team), [England](/source/England_national_rugby_league_team) and [Lancashire](/source/Lancashire_rugby_league_team), and at club level for [Rochdale Hornets](/source/Rochdale_Hornets) (two spells), [Halifax](/source/Halifax_R.L.F.C.), [Castleford](/source/Castleford_Tigers) and [Dewsbury](/source/Dewsbury_Rams), as a , or .[2][4][5][6]

## Playing career

Born in [Rochdale](/source/Rochdale), [Lancashire](/source/Lancashire), Schofield began his professional [rugby league](/source/Rugby_league) career with his hometown club [Rochdale Hornets](/source/Rochdale_Hornets) in 1949. He played as a er during his early career, but switched to on the suggestion of Hornets coach [Cec Fifield](/source/Cec_Fifield).[1]

Schofield played at in [Halifax](/source/Halifax_R.L.F.C.)'s 4-4 draw with [Warrington](/source/Warrington_Wolves) in the [1954 Challenge Cup](/source/1954_Challenge_Cup) Final during the [1953–54 season](/source/1953%E2%80%9354_Northern_Rugby_Football_League_season#Challenge_Cup) at [Wembley Stadium](/source/Wembley_Stadium_(1923)), [London](/source/London) on Saturday 24 April 1954, in front of a crowd of 81,841, and played at in the 4-8 defeat by [Warrington](/source/Warrington_Wolves) in the [1954 Challenge Cup](/source/1954_Challenge_Cup) Final [replay](/source/Replay_(sports)) during the [1953–54 season](/source/1953%E2%80%9354_Northern_Rugby_Football_League_season#Challenge_Cup) at [Odsal Stadium](/source/Odsal_Stadium), [Bradford](/source/Bradford) on Wednesday 5 May 1954, in front of a record crowd of 102,575 or more.[7]

### International honours

Schofield won [caps](/source/Cap_(sport)) for [England](/source/England_national_rugby_league_team) while at Rochdale Hornets in 1952 against Wales, in 1953 against France, and won a [cap](/source/Cap_(sport)) for [Great Britain](/source/Great_Britain_national_rugby_league_team) while at Halifax in 1955 against New Zealand.

Schofield also represented [Great Britain](/source/Great_Britain_national_rugby_league_team) while at Halifax between 1952 and 1956 against France (1 non-[Test](/source/Test_match_(rugby_league)) match).[8]
