# Derrick Main

**Derrick Roy Main** (20 November 1931 – February 2022) was a Welsh international [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) player.

Main was born in [Cairo](/source/Cairo), Egypt, to a Cornish mother and Scottish father. The family had moved to [Dover](/source/Dover), England, by the outbreak of World War II and during the conflict were evacuated to [Abergavenny](/source/Abergavenny), Wales. He was educated at [King Henry VIII Grammar School](/source/King_Henry_VIII_Grammar_School).[1]

Following his national service, Main studied teaching at [St Luke's College, Exeter](/source/St_Luke's_Campus). He played on the [St Luke's XV](/source/Exeter_University_RFC) and represented Devon in county fixtures, including the [1956–57 County Championship](/source/1956%E2%80%9357_Rugby_Union_County_Championship) final win over Yorkshire. A prop, Main won a [Wales](/source/Wales_national_rugby_union_team) call up in 1959, while playing with [London Welsh](/source/London_Welsh). He featured in all four [1959 Five Nations](/source/1959_Five_Nations) matches, debuting in a home win over England, playing beside [Bryn Meredith](/source/Bryn_Meredith) and [Ray Prosser](/source/Ray_Prosser) in the front-row.[2][3]

Main initially pursued a career in teaching, working at [Bancroft's School](/source/Bancroft's_School) and [Bishop's Stortford College](/source/Bishop's_Stortford_College). He later ran a woodworking factory in Herefordshire which repaired kitchen and household fittings.[1]
