**Derpibooru** (a [portmanteau](/source/Portmanteau) of [Derpy Hooves](/source/Derpy_Hooves) and the suffix *[-booru](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/booru#English)*, a [reborrowing](/source/Reborrowing) from Japanese *bōru*, meaning "board") is an [imageboard](/source/Imageboard) [fan site](/source/Fan_site) dedicated to hosting and archiving visual [fan art](/source/Fan_art) created by the [*My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic* fandom](/source/My_Little_Pony%3A_Friendship_Is_Magic_fandom). Launched in June 2012, it is the largest and most popular *My Little Pony* imageboard.[1][2] As of January 2026, Derpibooru hosts over 3.3 million images (excluding deleted and duplicate images), 520,000 registered users, and 11 million comments.[‡ 1]

Similar to established imageboards like [4chan](/source/4chan), Derpibooru has a minimalist interface with limited social features. The site allows users to [post and comment anonymously](/source/Anonymous_post) and upload [*My Little Pony* fan art](/source/Art_of_the_My_Little_Pony%3A_Friendship_Is_Magic_fandom), whether previously published on other platforms[3] or original. Derpibooru uses a user-driven [tagging system](/source/Tag_(metadata)) characteristic of [folksonomies](/source/Folksonomies), which allows for [categorization](/source/Categorization) and content searching;[2][3] it uses a [content rating](/source/Content_rating) system of seven categories: *safe*, *suggestive*, *questionable*, *[explicit](/source/Clop_(erotic_fan_art))*, *semi-grimdark*, *grimdark*, and *grotesque*.[3]

Derpibooru uses a software called Philomena (named after [Princess Celestia](/source/Princess_Celestia)'s pet [phoenix](/source/Phoenix_(mythology)) in the episode "[A Bird in the Hoof](/source/A_Bird_in_the_Hoof)"), which is licensed under the [AGPL](/source/GNU_Affero_General_Public_License) and written in [Elixir](/source/Elixir_(programming_language)), [TypeScript](/source/TypeScript), [CSS](/source/CSS), [Rust](/source/Rust_(programming_language)), and [JavaScript](/source/JavaScript).[‡ 2][‡ 3] It is the successor to the previously used [Rails](/source/Ruby_on_Rails)-based booru-on-rails project.[‡ 4]
