**Sir John Dermot Turing, 12th Baronet** (born 26 February 1961)[2] is a British [solicitor](/source/Solicitor) and author.[3][4][5]

## Education

Turing was educated at [Sherborne School](/source/Sherborne_School) and [King's College, Cambridge](/source/King's_College%2C_Cambridge). He then undertook a [DPhil](/source/DPhil) degree in the genetics of the [fruit fly](/source/Drosophila_melanogaster) as a postgraduate student of [New College, Oxford](/source/New_College%2C_Oxford).[1][6]

## Career

After his DPhil, Turing moved into the legal profession[2][7] initially as an [HM Treasury](/source/HM_Treasury) solicitor. He then worked at the international law firm [Clifford Chance](/source/Clifford_Chance), where he was a partner until 2014 and latterly a consultant.[8] He specialized in the financial sector, especially with respect to failed banks, [regulation](/source/Financial_regulation), and [risk management](/source/Risk_management).

In 2012, the centenary year of his uncle [Alan Turing](/source/Alan_Turing)'s birth, Dermot Turing became a trustee of [Bletchley Park](/source/Bletchley_Park), where Alan worked as a [cryptologist](/source/Cryptanalysis) during [World War II](/source/World_War_II).[7] In 2015, he wrote a book on Alan, *[Prof: Alan Turing Decoded](/source/Prof%3A_Alan_Turing_Decoded)*,[9] and in 2017, he contributed a chapter to *[The Turing Guide](/source/The_Turing_Guide)*.[10] He is a member of the European Post-Trade Forum and a trustee of the [Turing Trust](/source/Turing_Trust). His interests also include [cryptanalysis](/source/Cryptanalysis) and [naval history](/source/Naval_history).[11]

Dermot Turing has commented on the accuracy of the 2014 film *[The Imitation Game](/source/The_Imitation_Game)*, a dramatization of Alan Turing's life.[12][13][14] In 2018, he published *[X, Y & Z: The Real Story of How Enigma Was Broken](/source/X%2C_Y_%26_Z%3A_The_Real_Story_of_How_Enigma_Was_Broken)*.[15]

### Awards and honours

In 2020, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the [Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland](/source/Order_of_Merit_of_the_Republic_of_Poland) for highlighting the role of the [Polish](/source/Polish_people) in breaking the Enigma Code.[16] He is a visiting [fellow](/source/Fellow) at [Kellogg College, Oxford](/source/Kellogg_College%2C_Oxford).[17]

## Family Tree

Turing is the nephew of Alan Turing[11][18] and the 12th [Baronet](/source/Baronet) in the [Turing baronetcy](/source/Turing_baronetcy).[2] He is the son of John Ferrier Turing and Beryl Mary Ada Turing née Hann. In 1986, he married Nicola Jane Simmonds, daughter of Malcolm Douglas Simmonds. In 1987, he succeeded his third cousin as the 12th Turing Baronet. He has two sons: John Malcolm Ferrier, his [heir apparent](/source/Heir_apparent) (born 1988) and James Robert Edward (born 1991)[2]
