# Derek Eaton

**Derek Lionel Eaton** (born 10 September 1941)[1] is a retired New Zealand Anglican bishop. He was the 9th [Anglican Bishop of Nelson](/source/Anglican_Bishop_of_Nelson), from 1990 to 2006.[2]

## Biography

He was educated at [Christchurch Boys' High School](/source/Christchurch_Boys'_High_School) and [Auckland College of Education](/source/Auckland_College_of_Education) after which he worked as a [teacher](/source/Teacher) until studying for the [Priesthood](/source/Priesthood). He was [ordained](/source/Ordained) in 1971[3] and after a [curacy](/source/Curate) at St Luke's, [Bristol](/source/Bristol)[4] he was [Vicar](/source/Vicar) of [Tunis](/source/Tunis). Later he was [Provost](/source/Provost_(religion)) of All Saint's Cathedral, [Cairo](/source/Cairo) and held [incumbencies](/source/Vicar) at [Bishopdale](/source/Bishopdale,_Christchurch) and (his last appointment before ordination to the [episcopate](/source/Episcopate)) [Redcliffs](/source/Redcliffs). He is married to Alice Eaton.[5] He was consecrated a bishop on 24 June 1990.[6]

After 16 years as Bishop of Nelson, Eaton returned to Africa to become assistant bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Egypt.[7] Since returning to New Zealand from Africa in January 2009, Eaton and his wife have been chaplains to [Bishopdale Theological College](/source/Bishopdale_Theological_College).[8]

In the [1985 New Year Honours](/source/1985_New_Year_Honours), Eaton was awarded the [Queen's Service Medal](/source/Queen's_Service_Medal) for community service.[9]
