**Deori** is a [community development block (CD block)](/source/Community_Development_Block_in_India) that forms an administrative division in the [Khori Mahuwa subdivision](/source/Khori_Mahuwa_subdivision)[1] of the [Giridih district](/source/Giridih_district) in the [Indian](/source/India) [state](/source/States_and_territories_of_India) of [Jharkhand](/source/Jharkhand).

## Overview

Giridih is a plateau region. The western portion of the district is part of a larger central plateau. The rest of the district is a lower plateau, a flat table land with an elevation of about 1,300 feet. At the edges, the ghats drop to about 700 feet. The Pareshnath Hills or [Shikharji](/source/Shikharji) rises to a height of 4,480 feet in the south-eastern part of the district. The district is thickly forested. Amongst the natural resources, it has coal and mica.[2][3] Inaugurating the [Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana](/source/Pradhan_Mantri_Ujjwala_Yojana) in 2016, [Raghubar Das](/source/Raghubar_Das), Chief Minister of Jharkhand, had indicated that there were 23 [lakh](/source/Lakh) [BPL](/source/Below_Poverty_Line_(India)) families in Jharkhand.[4] There was a plan to bring the BPL proportion in the total population down to 35%.[5]

## Maoist activities

Jharkhand is one of the states affected by [Maoist](/source/Naxalite) activities. As of 2012[\[update\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Deori_block&action=edit), Giridih was one of the 14 highly affected districts in the state.[6]As of 2016[\[update\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Deori_block&action=edit), Giridih was identified as one of the 13 focus areas by the state police to check Maoist activities.[7] In 2017, the Moists, in Giridih district, have torched more than 50 vehicles engaged in road construction or carrying goods.[8]

## Geography

Deori is located at [24°30′36″N 86°11′33″E / 24.51000°N 86.19250°E / 24.51000; 86.19250](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Deori_block&params=24_30_36_N_86_11_33_E_).

Deori CD block is bounded by Kawakole CD block, in [Nawada district](/source/Nawada_district) of Bihar and Khara CD block, in [Jamui district](/source/Jamui_district) of Bihar, on the north, Sono and Chakai CD blocks, of Jamui district of Bihar, on the east, [Jamua](/source/Jamua_(community_development_block)) and [Dhanwar](/source/Dhanwar_(community_development_block)) CD blocks on the south and [Tisri](/source/Tisri_block) CD block on the west.[9][10]

Deori CD block has an area of 423.61 km2. It has 27 [gram panchayats](/source/Gram_panchayat), and 269 inhabited villages. [Deori](/source/Deori%2C_Giridih) and [Bhelwaghati](/source/Bhelwaghati) police stations serve this block.[11][12] Headquarters of this CD block is at [Deori](/source/Deori%2C_Giridih). 22.09% of the area has forest cover.[9][13]

The main river in Deori CD block is Kunda.[13]

[Gram panchayats](/source/Gram_panchayat) in Deori CD block are:Khatori, Jamkhukharo, Chiknadih, Manikbad, Bairiya, Barwabad, Salaiyadih (Khorodih), Marudih, Harladih, Dhengadih, Sikrudih, Tilakdih, Bhelwaghati, Guniyathar, Ghaskaridih, Ghose, Jamdiha, Asko, Nekpur, Parsatand, Bedodih, Hariyadih, Chahal, Chatro, Gadidighi, Bansdih and Kosogondo Dighi.[13]

## Demographics

### Population

According to the [2011 Census of India](/source/2011_Census_of_India), Deori CD block had a total population of 182,527, all of which were rural. There were 94,686 (52%) males and 87,841 (48%) females. Population in the age range 0–6 years was 33,133. [Scheduled Castes](/source/Scheduled_Castes_and_Scheduled_Tribes) numbered 28,118 (15.40%) and [Scheduled Tribes](/source/Scheduled_Castes_and_Scheduled_Tribes) numbered 22,540 (12.35%).[14]

### Literacy

As of 2011[\[update\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Deori_block&action=edit) census the total number of literate persons in Deori CD block was 93,433 (62.54% of the population over 6 years) out of which males numbered 60,145 (77.30% of the male population over 6 years) and females numbered 33,288 (46.50% of the female population over 6 years). The [gender disparity](/source/Literacy#Gender_disparities) (the difference between female and male literacy rates) was 30.81%.[14]

As of 2011[\[update\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Deori_block&action=edit) census, literacy in Giridih district was 63.14% [15] Literacy in Jharkhand was 66.41% in 2011.[15] Literacy in India in 2011 was 74.04%.[16]

Khortha is the main spoken language. Hindi is the official language. Urdu and Santali are also spoken.

## Rural poverty

40-50% of the population of Giridih district were in the [BPL](/source/Below_Poverty_Line) category in 2004–2005, being in the same category as Godda, Koderma and Hazaribagh districts.[19] Rural poverty in Jharkhand declined from 66% in 1993–94 to 46% in 2004–05. In 2011, it has come down to 39.1%.[20]

In Deori CD block in 2011, amongst the class of total workers, cultivators numbered 26,111 and formed 34.16%, agricultural labourers numbered 36,254 and formed 47.42%, household industry workers numbered 3,184 and formed 4.16% and other workers numbered 10,899 and formed 14.26%. Total workers numbered 76,448 and formed 41.88% of the total population, and non-workers numbered 106,079 and formed 58.12% of the population.[21]

Note: In the census records a person is considered a cultivator, if the person is engaged in cultivation/ supervision of land owned. When a person who works on another person's land for wages in cash or kind or share, is regarded as an agricultural labourer. Household industry is defined as an industry conducted by one or more members of the family within the household or village, and one that does not qualify for registration as a factory under the [Factories Act](/source/Factories_Act%2C1948%2C_India). Other workers are persons engaged in some economic activity other than cultivators, agricultural labourers and household workers. It includes factory, mining, plantation, transport and office workers, those engaged in business and commerce, teachers, entertainment artistes and so on.[22]

### Infrastructure

There are 269 inhabited villages in Deori CD block. In 2011, 63 villages had power supply. 1 village had tap water (treated/ untreated), 269 villages had well water (covered/ uncovered), 251 villages had hand pumps, and all villages had drinking water facility. 36 villages had post offices, 4 villages had a sub post office, 3 village had telephones (land lines) and 143 villages had mobile phone coverage. 267 villages had pucca (paved) village roads, 58 villages had bus service (public/ private), 21 villages had [autos](/source/Auto_rickshaw)/ modified autos, and 92 villages had tractors. 29 villages had bank branches, 21 villages had agricultural credit societies, 4 villages had cinema/ video halls, no village had public library and public reading room. 89 villages had [public distribution system](/source/Public_distribution_system), 26 villages had weekly haat (market) and 120 villages had [assembly](/source/Vidhan_Sabha) [polling stations](/source/Polling_place).[23]

### Agriculture

Hills occupy a large portion of Giridih district. The soil is generally rocky and sandy and that helps jungles and bushes to grow. The forest area, forming a large portion of total area, in the district is evenly distributed all over. Some areas near the rivers have [alluvial](/source/Alluvium) soil. In Deori CD block, the percentage of cultivable area to total area is 20.91%. The percentage of cultivable area to the total area for the district, as a whole, is 27.04%. Irrigation is inadequate. The percentage of irrigated area to cultivable area in Deori CD block is 10.88%. May to October is the [Kharif season](/source/Kharif_crop), followed by the [Rabi season](/source/Rabi_crop). Rice, sown in 50% of the gross sown area, is the main crop in the district. Other important crops grown are: maize, wheat, sugar cane, pulses and vegetables.[24]

Deori CD block is home to mica mines.[13]

### Backward Regions Grant Fund

Giridih district is listed as a backward region and receives financial support from the [Backward Regions Grant Fund](/source/Backward_Regions_Grant_Fund). The fund created by the Government of India is designed to redress regional imbalances in development. As of 2012, 272 districts across the country were listed under this scheme. The list includes 21 districts of Jharkhand.[25][26]

## Education

Deori CD block had 83 villages with pre-primary schools, 228 villages with primary schools, 71 villages with middle schools, 19 villages with secondary schools, 3 villages with senior secondary schools, 15 vocational training school/ ITI, 1 non-formal training centre, 37 villages with no educational facility.[27] .*Senior secondary schools are also known as Inter colleges in Jharkhand

## Healthcare

Deori CD block had 1 village with community health centre, 3 villages with [primary health centres](/source/Primary_Health_Centre_(India)), 12 villages with primary health subcentres, 16 villages with maternity and child welfare centres, 6 villages with allopathic hospitals, 5 villages with dispensaries, 10 villages with veterinary hospitals, 18 villages with family welfare centres, 30 villages with medicine shops.[27] .*Private medical practitioners, alternative medicine etc. not included
