**Denys Zacharopoulos** (born 1952 in [Athens](/source/Athens), [Greece](/source/Greece)) is an [art historian](/source/Art_historian) and [theorist](/source/Art_theory). He works as Professor of [Art History](/source/Art_History), author, and curator, amongst others at the 48th [Biennale](/source/Venice_Biennale) in [Venice](/source/Venice) ([Italy](/source/Italy)) and [documenta](/source/Documenta) IX in [Kassel](/source/Kassel) ([Germany](/source/Germany)).

## Biography

Denys Zacharopoulos studied music in Athens and from 1970 in [France](/source/France) literature, semantics and philosophy, followed by history and sociology of the arts and in literature.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] His teachers were [Jean Cassou](/source/Jean_Cassou), [Gaëtan Picon](/source/Ga%C3%ABtan_Picon), [Louis Marin](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Marin_(philosophe)) and [Roland Barthes](/source/Roland_Barthes). He lived in France and became a French citizen. Since 2000, he has lived in Greece.

In 1975, Denys Zacharopoulos became program coordinator of the [Institute of Contemporary Arts](/source/Institute_of_Contemporary_Arts) in [London](/source/London), [England](/source/England). He then spent time in [New York](/source/New_York_City) and taught as Professor in the Academies of Fine Arts in [Geneva](/source/Geneva), [Vienna](/source/Vienna), and [Amsterdam](/source/Amsterdam).

During this period he forged intensive personal contacts to many contemporary artists of his generation, in particular to James Welling, Matt Mullican, Ernst Caramelle, [Jean-Marc Bustamante](/source/Jean-Marc_Bustamante), [Juan Muñoz](/source/Juan_Mu%C3%B1oz_(sculptor)), [Thomas Schütte](/source/Thomas_Sch%C3%BCtte) and Reinhard Mucha.

## Professional activities
