Simpson signed with [Coventry City](/source/Coventry_City_F.C.) in May 1939 after being spotted playing for Saleem Baptist.<ref name="grecians"/> He guested for [Port Vale](/source/Port_Vale_F.C.) during [the war](/source/World_War_II), in 1946.<ref name="kent">{{cite book|last=Kent|first=Jeff|title=Port Vale Personalities|publisher=Witan Books|page=267|year=1996|isbn=0-9529152-0-0}}</ref> After continuing his career at [Highfield Road](/source/Highfield_Road), he scored five goals in 67 [Second Division](/source/Football_League_Second_Division) games, as Coventry finished eighth in [1946–47](/source/1946%E2%80%9347_Football_League), tenth in [1947–48](/source/1947%E2%80%9348_Football_League), 16th in [1948–49](/source/1948%E2%80%9349_Football_League), and 12th in [1949–50](/source/1949%E2%80%9350_Football_League). Simpson was allowed to leave the club by [manager](/source/Manager_(association_football)) [Harry Storer](/source/Harry_Storer%2C_Jr.) and moved on to [Reading](/source/Reading_F.C.) in May 1950. He helped the "Royals" to third in the [Third Division South](/source/Football_League_Third_Division_South) in [1950–51](/source/1950%E2%80%9351_Football_League), before they moved up to second place in [1951–52](/source/1951%E2%80%9352_Football_League) – just five points behind champions [Plymouth Argyle](/source/Plymouth_Argyle_F.C.).
