**Deniss Karpak** (born 18 July 1986) is an [Estonian](/source/Estonia) [sailor](/source/Sailing_(sport)).[1]

Karpak was born in [Tallinn](/source/Tallinn). He finished 24th at the [2008 Summer Olympics](/source/2008_Summer_Olympics) in the [Laser class](/source/Sailing_at_the_2008_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men's_Laser_class). At the [2012 Summer Olympics](/source/2012_Summer_Olympics) he finished 11th in the [Finn class](/source/Sailing_at_the_2012_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Finn_class) and at the [2016 Summer Olympics](/source/2016_Summer_Olympics) he finished 20th.[2]

## Biography

He was born to sailing athlete [Igor Karpak](/source/Igor_Karpak) and swimmer [Marina Trofimova](/source/Marina_Trofimova).

He began his high school education in [Odesa, Ukraine](/source/Odesa%2C_Ukraine). When his family moved back to Estonia, he continued his studies at [Tallinna Läänemere Gümnaasium](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Tallinna_L%C3%A4%C3%A4nemere_G%C3%BCmnaasium&action=edit&redlink=1), graduating in 2004.

Karpak had his first sailing experience when he was six with an [Optimist](/source/Optimist_(dinghy)). He started to regularly engage in sailing when was 12 years old in 1998 with the sailing club "Baltsail". In 1999 Karpak moved to the sailing club [Kalev Sailing School](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kalev_Sailing_School&action=edit&redlink=1) (KPSK). In 2003 he moved over to the [Laser](/source/Laser_(dinghy)) class. Since 2009 he has been sailing with the [Finn](/source/Finn_(dinghy)) class.[3]
