# Denis Russell

**Denis Leslie Russell** (2 July 1909 – 29 December 1986) was an English [first-class cricketer](/source/First-class_cricket) active 1928–1932 who played for [Middlesex](/source/Middlesex_County_Cricket_Club) and [Oxford University](/source/Oxford_University_Cricket_Club). He was born in [Paddington](/source/Paddington), Middlesex; died in [Merrow, Surrey](/source/Merrow,_Surrey).[1]

Russell was educated at [Beaumont College](/source/Beaumont_College), Berkshire, and [University College, Oxford](/source/University_College,_Oxford).[2] During [World War II](/source/World_War_II) he was an officer in [GHQ Liaison Regiment](/source/GHQ_Liaison_Regiment).[3] At the end of the war he was appointed MBE (along with many other servicemen) "in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in North-West Europe."[4] He also received a formal [mention in despatches](/source/Mention_in_despatches) after the war.[5] He was awarded the [Territorial Decoration](/source/Territorial_Decoration) in 1950.[6]
