The **Democratic Homeland Party** ([Armenian](/source/Armenian_language): Ժողովրդավարական հայրենիք կուսակցություն, [romanized](/source/Romanization_of_Armenian): *Zhoghovrdavarakan Hayrenik’ kusakts’ut’yun*) is an [Armenian](/source/Armenia) [political party](/source/Political_party). The Chairman of the party is Petros Makeyan.[3]

## History

The party was founded in 1988. The party withdrew its participation in the [2003 Armenian parliamentary election](/source/2003_Armenian_parliamentary_election), over concerns of electoral corruption.[4]

The party subsequently joined the [Armenian National Congress](/source/Armenian_National_Congress) and participated in an electoral bloc with them in the [2012 Armenian parliamentary election](/source/2012_Armenian_parliamentary_election). The Armenian National Congress won 7 seats in the [National Assembly](/source/National_Assembly_of_Armenia).[5] Prior to the 2012 election, the Democratic Homeland Party feared that the election would be rigged and proclaimed that the [Republican Party of Armenia](/source/Republican_Party_of_Armenia) was a criminal organization.[6][7] The Democratic Homeland Party eventually became skeptical of and left the Armenian National Congress.

Several party members participated in the [2013 Yerevan City Council election](/source/2013_Yerevan_City_Council_election), under the [Heritage](/source/Heritage_(Armenia)) party's [Barev Yerevan](/source/Hello_Yerevan) alliance. The alliance came in third place, winning 8.48% of the vote.[8]

The party currently does not have any representation in the National Assembly and acts as an [extra-parliamentary](/source/Extra-parliamentary_opposition) force.

## Ideology

The party believes in developing a strong and transparent democracy in Armenia, and opposes political [oligarchy](/source/Oligarchy).[9][10] The party also opposes serving the interests of foreign powers in Armenia, at the expense of Armenia's and [Artsakh](/source/Republic_of_Artsakh)'s security.[11]

## Activities

In March 2014, party leader Petros Makeyan stated that the [Prosperous Armenia](/source/Prosperous_Armenia) party and its leader [Gagik Tsarukyan](/source/Gagik_Tsarukyan) are highly corrupt and had gained political support through financial bribery.[12]

Also in 2014, Makeyan proclaimed that [Serzh Sargsyan](/source/Serzh_Sargsyan), the leader of the Republican Party of Armenia, had been indirectly controlling the [Orinats Yerkir](/source/Orinats_Yerkir) party for years, during an interview.[13]

In June 2019, the party sent a letter to the Prime Minister of Armenia, [Nikol Pashinyan](/source/Nikol_Pashinyan), appealing him to strengthen democracy in Armenia.[14]

On 22 December 2020, the Democratic Homeland Party, the [Conservative Party](/source/Conservative_Party_(Armenia)) and the [Union for National Self-Determination](/source/Union_for_National_Self-Determination) held a joint meeting discussing the political situation in Armenia.[15]

On 26 February 2021, the party released a statement along with the [Armenian Constructive Party](/source/Armenian_Constructive_Party) and the [Conservative Party](/source/Conservative_Party_(Armenia)), condemning the signing of the [2020 Nagorno-Karabakh ceasefire agreement](/source/2020_Nagorno-Karabakh_ceasefire_agreement). The three parties called for an end to Russian-Turkish interference in Armenia and Artsakh.[16]

On 15 April 2021, the party signed a joint declaration with eight other political parties calling on the President of Armenia to ensure democracy and the [Constitution of Armenia](/source/Constitution_of_Armenia) is upheld in the country during the [2020–2021 Armenian protests](/source/2020%E2%80%932021_Armenian_protests).[17]
