**Delaware River Drive** was a [state highway](/source/State_highway) in the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [New Jersey](/source/New_Jersey).

## Route description

A 1913 map of the proposed New Jersey State Highway System with an accompanying report shows the route of the Delaware River Drive beginning at the State Capitol on West State Street in [Trenton](/source/Trenton%2C_New_Jersey). It then followed West State Street and Sanhican Drive to the city limits, then followed present-day [Route 175](/source/New_Jersey_Route_175) to present-day [Route 29](/source/New_Jersey_Route_29) to [Frenchtown](/source/Frenchtown%2C_New_Jersey).

From Frenchtown north, the Delaware River Drive followed [County Route 619](/source/County_Route_619_(Hunterdon_County%2C_New_Jersey)) (CR 619) into [Milford](/source/Milford%2C_New_Jersey), where it met [CR 519](/source/County_Route_519_(New_Jersey)), following CR 519 a short distance to the center of Milford. North of Milford, the route followed [CR 627](/source/County_Route_627_(Hunterdon_County%2C_New_Jersey)) as far as [Riegelsville](/source/Riegelsville%2C_New_Jersey), then continued along River Road to [Carpentersville](/source/Carpentersville%2C_New_Jersey), and Carpentersville Road to [Phillipsburg](/source/Phillipsburg%2C_New_Jersey).

The Delaware River Drive continued north of Phillipsburg on present-day [CR 646](/source/County_Route_646_(Warren_County%2C_New_Jersey)) to CR 519, following CR 519 through [Harmony](/source/Harmony_Township%2C_New_Jersey) and [Roxburg](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Roxburg,_New_Jersey&action=edit&redlink=1) to [CR 620](/source/County_Route_620_(Warren_County%2C_New_Jersey)), which took the drive into [Belvidere](/source/Belvidere%2C_New_Jersey), the [county seat](/source/County_seat) of [Warren County](/source/Warren_County%2C_New_Jersey), and beyond to [U.S. Route 46](/source/U.S._Route_46) (US 46).

The route then followed the present US 46 through [Manunka Chunk](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Manunka_Chunk,_New_Jersey&action=edit&redlink=1) to [Columbia](/source/Columbia%2C_New_Jersey); the Delaware River Drive between Columbia and [Dunnfield](/source/Dunnfield%2C_New_Jersey) has been obliterated since 1953 by an alignment of the former [US 611](/source/U.S._Route_611_in_New_Jersey), now part of [Interstate 80](/source/Interstate_80_in_New_Jersey) (I-80).

North of I-80, The Delaware River Drive follows the historic [Old Mine Road](/source/Old_Mine_Road) for much of its route to the [New York](/source/New_York_(state)) state line at [Montague Township](/source/Montague_Township%2C_New_Jersey) in [Sussex County](/source/Sussex_County%2C_New_Jersey). Much of this section is through the [Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area](/source/Delaware_Water_Gap_National_Recreation_Area). North of [US 206](/source/U.S._Route_206_in_New_Jersey), the Delaware River Drive follows [CR 521](/source/County_Route_521_(New_Jersey)).[1]

## History

Legislated in 1911,[2] this was New Jersey's second state highway. Legislation in 1913 provided for the extension of the Delaware River Drive to [Cape May](/source/Cape_May%2C_New_Jersey).[3]

The Egan Bill of 1916,[4] and the Edge Bill of 1917[5] did not provide for a route along the Delaware River; the Delaware River Drive may be considered to have been decommissioned by these acts.

This route, and the [Ocean Highway](/source/Ocean_Highway_(New_Jersey)) predated any highway numbering system in New Jersey, and may be considered a transition between the early [auto trails](/source/Auto_trail) and modern state highways.
