**Amanda Delara Nikman** ([Persian](/source/Persian_language): آماندا دلارا نیکمن; born 1997), known by her stage name **Delara** (formerly **Amanda Delara**), is a Norwegian and Iranian singer. Starting her career in 2016 with debut single, "Paper Paper", she has released four EPs and one studio album, *Shahrazad* (2023). In 2024, her song "Siste dans", from the film [*The Snow Sister*](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Snow_Sister&action=edit&redlink=1) [[Wikidata](https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:EntityPage/Q130478877#sitelinks-wikipedia)], reached [number-one in Norway](/source/List_of_number-one_singles_of_the_2020s_(Norway)).

## Early life

Delara Nikman[a] was born in Sweden in 1997 to [Iranian parents](/source/Swedish_Iranians).[1] Her mother grew up in Iran during the [war with Iraq](/source/Iran%E2%80%93Iraq_War) and was raised by a single mother.[1] Delara moved to Norway at the age of one, spending fourteen years in [Lillehammer](/source/Lillehammer), and subsequently in [Neskollen](/source/Neskollen) from the age of fifteen.[3] Her original plan was to become a doctor.[4] At the age of six, she heard "[Numb/Encore](/source/Numb%2FEncore)" by [Jay-Z](/source/Jay-Z) and [Linkin Park](/source/Linkin_Park), which had a lasting impact on her; she describes it as the first time she felt a love for music.[1] Delara won a school talent competition, which led her to think that she could pursue a career in music.[5] She started making music full-time after secondary school.[1]

As a teenager, Delara would post videos on [Instagram](/source/Instagram) of her singing while playing piano. At the age of sixteen, she got a hold of the [Snapchat](/source/Snapchat) account of [Kaveh](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kaveh_(rapper)&action=edit&redlink=1) [[no](https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaven_(artist))], a fellow Norwegian–Iranian artist who was popular at the time, and sent him videos of herself singing.[5] He invited Delara to his studio in [Økern](/source/%C3%98kern), Oslo, and became a mentor to her, helping her with recording her self-written songs.[5]

## Career

Debut single "Paper Paper" was released in August 2016 under the name Amanda Delara, through the [independent record label](/source/Independent_record_label) [GR:OW](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=GR:OW_Records&action=edit&redlink=1).[5][6] The [dark pop](/source/Dark_pop) song reached [Spotify](/source/Spotify)'s Viral charts both globally and in the US.[7] She additionally signed with [Sony Music Norway](/source/Sony_Music_Norway) in 2017,[8] prior to the release of R&B follow-up singles "Dirhamz" and "New Generation", and Delara's first EP, *Rebel*, released later that year.[9][10][11] In the same year, she also released a cover of "Gunerius" by [Karpe](/source/Karpe)[b], which was featured in the Norwegian television series *[Skam](/source/Skam_(TV_series))*.[13]

The single "We Don't Run from Anyone" was released in early 2018,[14] and was used as the theme song to the television series [*Mesternes mester*](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mesternes_mester&action=edit&redlink=1) [[no](https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesternes_mester)].[2] It was included on her second EP, *Running Deep*, released in May 2018, which Delara described as showcasing a more personal side of herself.[15] The EP, along with the follow-up single "Soldiers" produced by [Askjell Solstrand](/source/Askjell_Solstrand),[16] garnered Delara a nomination at the 2018 [Spellemannprisen](/source/Spellemannprisen) in the category of Pop Artist of the Year.[17]

*Et lite stykke Norge*, Delara's third EP and her first in Norwegian, was released in January 2020.[18] Its cover features [Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson](/source/Bj%C3%B8rnstjerne_Bj%C3%B8rnson), considered one of the [most influential Norwegian writers](/source/The_Four_Greats_(Norwegian_writers)), and its lyrics discuss Delara's identity as a minority in Norway, as well as the [Law of Jante](/source/Law_of_Jante), crime, and self-confidence.[18][19] Some of its content was incorporated into the [national curriculum](/source/National_curriculum) for secondary schools in Norway.[20] In September 2020, she decided to use the mononymous Delara as her stage name.[21][22] Later that year, "Checka", a collaboration with rapper [Loredana](/source/Loredana_(rapper)), became a hit in [German-speaking Europe](/source/German-speaking_Europe),[5] charting in the top five in three countries and earning [Gold](/source/List_of_music_recording_certifications) certifications in Austria and Switzerland.[23][24] It was included on her fourth EP, *Timepiece*, released in May 2021 and created during the [COVID-19 pandemic](/source/COVID-19_pandemic_in_Norway), which features music that is more calm and the productions less heavy.[25][26]

*Shahrazad* (2023), Delara's debut album, was named after [the character](/source/Shahrazad) (*depiction pictured*) from *[One Thousand and One Nights](/source/One_Thousand_and_One_Nights)*.

In May 2023, Delara was one of seventy women of colour who accompanied [Alicia Keys](/source/Alicia_Keys) in a reimagined version of "[If I Ain't Got You](/source/If_I_Ain't_Got_You)" for the [soundtrack](/source/Queen_Charlotte%3A_A_Bridgerton_Story_(soundtrack)) of *[Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story](/source/Queen_Charlotte%3A_A_Bridgerton_Story)*.[27] In June 2023, Delara's Norwegian-language cover of the Swedish-language "[Josefin](/source/Josefin_(song))" by [Albin Lee Meldau](/source/Albin_Lee_Meldau) became popular on [TikTok](/source/TikTok), resulting in her releasing a studio version.[28] It charted at number two in Norway and has been certified double platinum by [IFPI Norge](/source/IFPI_Norge).[29][30] *Shahrazad*, Delara's debut album, was released in November 2023; it was named after [the character of the same name](/source/Scheherazade) from the Middle Eastern folk tale collection *[One Thousand and One Nights](/source/One_Thousand_and_One_Nights)*.[31] At the 2023 Spellemannprisen ceremony, *Shahrazad* won in the category of Release of the Year.[32]

In 2024, Delara appeared on the [fifteenth season](/source/Coke_Studio_Pakistan_season_15) of *[Coke Studio Pakistan](/source/Coke_Studio_Pakistan)*, contributing to the song "Piya Piya Calling" alongside Karpe, Pakistani singer [Kaifi Khalil](/source/Kaifi_Khalil), and Norwegian dance group [Quick Style](/source/Quick_Style). The song was recorded remotely, with its music video shot in mid-2023, and features lyrics in Arabic, [Balochi](/source/Balochi_language), English, [Persian](/source/Persian_language), Gujarati, Norwegian, and Urdu.[33][34] It became a top-five hit in Norway and went on to win the [P3 Gull](/source/P3_Gull) for Song of the Year at the 2024 ceremony, where Delara had two additional nominations.[29][35] "Siste dans", a [Christmas song](/source/Christmas_song) written for the film *[The Snow Sister](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Snow_Sister&action=edit&redlink=1)* (2024), became viral on social media, with the song being used in videos to memorialise people who had died.[36][37] It reached [number-one in Norway](/source/List_of_number-one_singles_of_the_2020s_(Norway)) in November 2024, becoming Delara's song to do so.[29]

### Other ventures

In 2021, Delara participated in the reality television series [*Over Atlanteren*](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Over_Atlanteren&action=edit&redlink=1) [[no](https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Over_Atlanteren)], where she and five other Norwegian celebrities with little sailing experience were tasked with sailing across the [Atlantic Ocean](/source/Atlantic_Ocean).[38]

## Personal life

Delara has an [Iranian passport](/source/Iranian_passport) and has been active bringing awareness to social issues affecting Iran such as [human rights abuses](/source/Human_rights_in_Iran).[1] Following the [death of Mahsa Amini](/source/Death_of_Mahsa_Amini), Delara collaborated with [Amnesty International](/source/Amnesty_International) to [organise a protest](/source/Mahsa_Amini_protests) in front of the [Norwegian parliament](/source/Norwegian_parliament) in late 2022, with over 1,000 participants.[5] At the red carpet of the 2022 [P3 Gull](/source/P3_Gull) ceremony, Delara carried a sign in support of Iranian rapper [Toomaj Salehi](/source/Toomaj_Salehi), who was arrested during protests.[39]

Delara speaks Persian and was interviewed on the Persian-language channel [Iran International](/source/Iran_International) about her activism.[17][40] Though most of her songs are in English, she has also released songs in Norwegian.[41] In addition, Delara revealed she was teaching herself Spanish during the [COVID-19 pandemic](/source/COVID-19_pandemic_in_Norway).[5]
