**Delbert Ray Thompson** (born February 21, 1958) is an American former professional [football](/source/American_football) player who was a [running back](/source/Running_back) for one season with the [Kansas City Chiefs](/source/Kansas_City_Chiefs) of the [National Football League](/source/National_Football_League) (NFL). He was selected by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the [1982 NFL draft](/source/1982_NFL_draft). He played [college football](/source/College_football) at the [University of Texas at Austin](/source/University_of_Texas_at_Austin), [Ranger College](/source/Ranger_College) and the [University of Texas at El Paso](/source/University_of_Texas_at_El_Paso).

## Early life and college

Delbert Ray Thompson was born on February 21, 1958, in [Kermit, Texas](/source/Kermit%2C_Texas).[1] He attended [Hamlin High School](/source/Hamlin_High_School) in [Hamlin, Texas](/source/Hamlin%2C_Texas).[1]

Thompson first played [college football](/source/College_football) for the [Texas Longhorns](/source/Texas_Longhorns_football) of the [University of Texas at Austin](/source/University_of_Texas_at_Austin) in 1977, totaling five carries for 32 yards, one reception for 18 yards, and one punt return for two yards.[2] He later transferred to [Ranger College](/source/Ranger_College).[1] He was then a two-year [letterman](/source/Letterman_(sports)) for the [UTEP Miners](/source/UTEP_Miners_football) of the [University of Texas at El Paso](/source/University_of_Texas_at_El_Paso) from 1980 to 1981.[1]

## Professional career

Thompson was selected by the [Kansas City Chiefs](/source/Kansas_City_Chiefs) in the fifth round, with the 130th overall pick, of the [1982 NFL draft](/source/1982_NFL_draft).[3] He played in six games for the Chiefs during the [1982 season](/source/1982_NFL_season), recording four carries for seven yards, two kick returns for 41 yards, and one fumble recovery.[3] He was placed on the injured reserve list on August 23, 1983.[4] Thompson was waived on March 20, 1984.[5]

Thompson was claimed on waivers by the [New York Jets](/source/New_York_Jets) on April 10, 1984.[6] He was released by the Jets on July 13, 1984.[5]
