**Derek Synnott** (born 17 October 1977) is an [Irish](/source/Irish_people) actor. He played Froderick in *[Princess of Thieves](/source/Princess_of_Thieves)* and DC Alan Carter in *[Murphy's Law](/source/Murphy's_Law_(British_TV_series))*.

Synnott was born and raised in [Dublin](/source/Dublin), [Ireland](/source/Ireland). When he was 11 years old, he and his family moved to [Essex](/source/Essex), [England](/source/England) in 1989.[2] He attended The Hedley Walter School, in Brentwood, Essex, from 1989 where he first honed his acting skills. He invented a character called "Budder".

He has also appeared in the TV version of *[Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels](/source/Lock%2C_Stock_and_Two_Smoking_Barrels)* titled "Lock Stock" and the Samuelson Productions feature *[Stormbreaker](/source/Stormbreaker_(film))*. In 2013, he appeared in *[The Great Train Robbery](/source/The_Great_Train_Robbery_(2013_TV_series))* as [Brian Field](/source/Brian_Field).

His first TV role was in the miniseries *[Every Woman Knows a Secret](/source/Every_Woman_Knows_a_Secret)* in 1999. Since then he has had major roles in programs such as *[Dangerfield](/source/Dangerfield_(TV_series))*, *[Waking the Dead](/source/Waking_the_Dead_(TV_series))*, *[Red Cap](/source/Red_Cap_(TV_series))*, *[Doc Martin](/source/Doc_Martin)* and *[New Tricks](/source/New_Tricks)*.

## Personal life

Synnott met actress [Keira Knightley](/source/Keira_Knightley) on the set of the 2001 TV movie *[Princess of Thieves](/source/Princess_of_Thieves)*. The two later appeared together in the short film *[Deflation](/source/Deflation_(2001_film))* by [Roger Ashton-Griffiths](/source/Roger_Ashton-Griffiths) and as extras in the larger film *[Thunderpants](/source/Thunderpants)*. In 2003, Synnott and Knightley broke up after two years together.
