Del Reisman was raised in [Los Angeles](/source/Los_Angeles).<ref name=latimes/> He received a [bachelor's degree](/source/bachelor's_degree) in English and [journalism](/source/journalism) from the [University of California, Berkeley](/source/University_of_California%2C_Berkeley).<ref name=latimes/> He joined the [United States Army Air Forces](/source/United_States_Army_Air_Forces) during [World War II](/source/World_War_II) and served as a [bombardier](/source/Bombardier_(air_force)) on board a [B-17](/source/B-17) in the European theater from 1942 to 1945.<ref name=latimes/><ref name=wrap/> He achieved the rank of first lieutenant.
