Hodgkinson played on the , and scored a [try](/source/Try_(rugby)) in [Leeds](/source/Leeds_Rhinos)' 9–7 victory over [Barrow](/source/Barrow_Raiders) in the [1956–57 Challenge Cup](/source/1956%E2%80%9357_Challenge_Cup) Final during the [1956–57 season](/source/1956%E2%80%9357_Northern_Rugby_Football_League_season#Challenge_Cup) at [Wembley Stadium](/source/Wembley_Stadium_(1923)), [London](/source/London) on Saturday 11 May 1957, in front of a crowd of 76,318,[3] he was aged-18 at the time.

Hodgkinson scored six [tries](/source/Try_(rugby)) in [Leeds](/source/Leeds_Rhinos)' 64–17 victory over [Huddersfield](/source/Huddersfield_Giants) in the [1958 Yorkshire Cup](/source/1958_Yorkshire_Cup) first round match during the [1958–59 season](/source/1958%E2%80%9359_Northern_Rugby_Football_League_season) at [Headingley](/source/Headingley_Rugby_Stadium), [Leeds](/source/Leeds) on Saturday 30 August 1958.[4]

Hodgkinson played on the in [Leeds](/source/Leeds_Rhinos)' 24–20 victory over [Wakefield Trinity](/source/Wakefield_Trinity) in the [1958 Yorkshire Cup](/source/1958_Yorkshire_Cup) Final during the [1958–59 season](/source/1958%E2%80%9359_Northern_Rugby_Football_League_season) at [Odsal Stadium](/source/Odsal_Stadium), [Bradford](/source/Bradford) on Saturday 18 October 1958.

He was forced to retire prematurely from the sport due to a persistent shoulder injury.[5]
