# Degu

The **Degus** are a group of [octodontid](/source/Octodontid) [rodents](/source/Rodent) in the [Octodontidae](/source/Octodontidae) family, but historically referred to the [common degu](/source/Common_degu) (*O. degus*).

Degus are placed in two genera:

- Genus ***[Octodon](/source/Octodon)*** - *O. bridgesi*, [Bridges's degu](/source/Bridges's_degu), found in [Argentina](/source/Argentina) and [Chile](/source/Chile) - *O. degus*, the [common degu](/source/Common_degu), historically referred to as just "degu", found in central Chile - *O. lunatus*, the [moon-toothed degu](/source/Moon-toothed_degu), a nocturnal animal found in central Chile - *O. pacificus*, the [Mocha Island degu](/source/Mocha_Island_degu) or [Pacific degu](/source/Pacific_degu), a recently discovered species found exclusively on [Mocha Island](/source/Mocha_Island), Chile
- Genus ***Octodontomys*** - *O. gliroides*, the [mountain degu](/source/Mountain_degu), found in the foothills of the [Andes](/source/Andes) in [Argentina](/source/Argentina), [Bolivia](/source/Bolivia) and [Chile](/source/Chile).
