# Deggingen

**Deggingen** is a municipality in the district of [Göppingen](/source/G%C3%B6ppingen_(district)) in [Baden-Württemberg](/source/Baden-W%C3%BCrttemberg), [Germany](/source/Germany).

## History

The [House of Helfenstein](/source/House_of_Helfenstein) ruled Deggingen until it went extinct in 1627. Deggingen and the town of Reichenbach im Täle were annexed by the [Kingdom of Württemberg](/source/Kingdom_of_W%C3%BCrttemberg) when, in 1806, the Lordship of Wiesensteig was [mediatized](/source/German_mediatization) to them. The two towns were assigned to [Oberamt Wiesensteig](/source/Oberamt_Wiesensteig) until 1810, when they were reassigned to [Oberamt Göppingen](/source/Oberamt_G%C3%B6ppingen). That district was reorganized as Landkreis Göppingen, which retained Deggingen and Reichenbach im Täle. The two towns expanded dramatically after [World War II](/source/World_War_II), though Reichenbach im Täle's growth tapered off by the end of the 1960s. Reichenbach im Täle was incorporated into Denningen in 1975.[2]

## Geography

The municipality (*[Gemeinde](/source/Municipalities_of_Germany)*) of Deggingen is located in [the district](/source/G%C3%B6ppingen_(district)) of [Göppingen](/source/G%C3%B6ppingen), in [Baden-Württemberg](/source/Baden-W%C3%BCrttemberg), one of the [16 States](/source/States_of_Germany) of the [Federal Republic of Germany](/source/Federal_Republic_of_Germany). Deggingen is physically located in the upper [Fils](/source/Fils_(river)) river valley, in the [Filsalb](/source/Filsalb) region of the [Middle Kuppenalb](/source/Middle_Kuppenalb). Elevation above sea level in the municipal area ranges from a high of 777 meters (2,549 ft) [Normalnull](/source/Normalnull) (NN) to a low of 465 meters (1,526 ft) NN.[2]

Portions of the Federally protected [Galgenberg](/source/Galgenberg_(Naturschutzgebiet,_G%C3%B6ppingen)), [Haarberg-Wasserberg](/source/Haarberg-Wasserberg), [Northern slopes of the Swabian Jura](/source/Northern_slopes_of_the_Swabian_Jura), [nature reserves](/source/Naturschutzgebiet) are located in Deggingen's municipal area.[2]

## Politics

Deggingen has two boroughs (*Ortsteile*), Deggingen and Reichenbach im Täle, and five villages: Ave Maria, Berneck, Bierkeller, Gairen, and Nordalb. In the municipal area are two [abandoned villages](/source/Abandoned_villages): Bogenweiler and Gerenberg. Deggingen is in a [mutually-beneficial municipal association](/source/Vereinbarte_Verwaltungsgemeinschaft) with the municipality of [Bad Ditzenbach](/source/Bad_Ditzenbach).[2]

### Coat of arms

The municipal [coat of arms](/source/Coat_of_arms) of Deggingen displays the head of an elephant, in [white](/source/Argent), above a [yellow](/source/Or_(heraldry)), six-pointed star, upon a [field](/source/Field_(heraldry)) of [red](/source/Gules). The elephant is taken from the coat of arms of the County of Helfenstein, as was the red-yellow [tincture](/source/Tincture_(heraldry)), while the six-pointed star has been a symbol of Deggingen since 1551. This coat of arms was approved and a municipal flag issued by the [Federal Ministry of the Interior](/source/Federal_Ministry_of_the_Interior,_Building_and_Community) on 30 June 1959.[2]

## Transportation

Deggingen lies on the historically important [Swabian Jura road](/source/Swabian_Jura_road). The municipality is connected to [Germany's network of roadways](/source/Driving_in_Germany) by [Bundesstraße 466](/source/Bundesstra%C3%9Fe_466). It was also served by the [Tälesbahn](/source/T%C3%A4lesbahn_(Geislingen%E2%80%93Wiesensteig)) railroad between 1903 and 1983. Local public transportation is provided by the [Filsland Mobilitätsverbundes](/source/Filsland_Mobilit%C3%A4tsverbundes).[2]
