{{Short description|Process of tracking a product's defects throughout its lifetime}}
{{More citations needed|date=March 2026}}

In [engineering](/source/engineering), '''defect tracking''' is the process of tracking the logged [defects](/source/Product_defect) in a product from beginning to closure (by [inspection](/source/inspection), [testing](/source/Quality_control), or recording [feedback](/source/feedback) from customers), and making new versions of the product that fix the defects. Defect tracking is important in [software engineering](/source/software_engineering) as complex software systems typically have tens, hundreds, or thousands of defects; therefore, managing, evaluating and prioritizing these defects is a difficult task.<ref>{{Cite web |title=What is Defect Tracking? |url=https://browserstack.wpengine.com/test-reporting-and-analytics/features/test-failure-root-cause-analysis/what-is-defect-tracking/ |access-date=2026-03-25 |website=BrowserStack |language=en-US}}</ref> When the number of defects gets quite large, and the defects need to be tracked over extended periods of time, use of a [defect tracking system](/source/Bug_tracking_system) can make the management task much easier.
