# Defant Bank

**Defant Bank** ([76°50′S 31°40′W](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=76_50_S_31_40_W)) is a [submarine bank](/source/Submarine_bank) in the [Weddell Sea](/source/Weddell_Sea) named for [Albert Defant](/source/Albert_Defant) (1884–1974), who was both a physician and an oceanographer/geophysicist specializing in tides. The name was proposed by Dr. [Heinrich Hinze](/source/Heinrich_Hinze) of the [Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research](/source/Alfred_Wegener_Institute_for_Polar_and_Marine_Research), [Bremerhaven, Germany](/source/Bremerhaven,_Germany), and was approved by the [Advisory Committee for Undersea Features](/source/Advisory_Committee_for_Undersea_Features) in June 1997.[1]
