**Decatur County** was a [county](/source/County_(United_States)) of the [state](/source/U.S._state) of [Alabama](/source/Alabama), [United States](/source/United_States). It was named for Commodore [Stephen Decatur](/source/Stephen_Decatur) of the [United States Navy](/source/United_States_Navy). Its [county seat](/source/County_seat) was [Woodville](/source/Woodville,_Alabama).

## History

Decatur County was established by the [Alabama Legislature](/source/Alabama_Legislature) on December 17, 1821.[1] In 1822, Woodville was selected as the county seat. Several years later, however, a survey showed the county did not have the minimum constitutional area, and so Decatur County was abolished on December 28, 1825[2][3] and divided between [Madison County](/source/Madison_County,_Alabama) and [Jackson County](/source/Jackson_County,_Alabama). The section added to Madison County was known informally for many years as "New Madison".
