# Debra Heffernan

**Debra J. Heffernan** (born April 8, 1962) is an American politician. She is a [Democratic](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)) member of the [Delaware House of Representatives](/source/Delaware_House_of_Representatives), representing District 6.[1][2]

Heffernan earned her [BS](/source/Bachelor_of_Science) in [biology](/source/Biology) from the [University of Delaware](/source/University_of_Delaware) and her [MS](/source/Master_of_Science) in [environmental toxicology](/source/Environmental_toxicology) from [Duke University](/source/Duke_University).

Heffernan is a part of the [centrist](/source/Centrist) wing of the [Delaware Democratic Party](/source/Delaware_Democratic_Party). She supported centrist US Senator [Tom Carper](/source/Tom_Carper) in the [2018 US Senate election in Delaware](/source/2018_United_States_Senate_election_in_Delaware) over [progressive](/source/Progressivism_in_the_United_States) challenger [Kerri Evelyn Harris](/source/Kerri_Evelyn_Harris).[3] In 2022, she defeated progressive challenger Becca Cotto in the Democratic primary.

## Electoral history

- In 2010, Heffernan won the three-way general election with 4,363 votes (51.9%) against [incumbent](/source/Incumbent) [Republican](/source/Republican_Party_(United_States)) [Tom Kovach](/source/Tom_Kovach) and [Libertarian](/source/Libertarian_Party_of_Delaware) nominee Matthew Flebbe.[4] She was one of only ten candidates to defeat a sitting Republican in a state house race in 2010 according to [Ballotpedia](/source/Ballotpedia).[5]
- In 2012, Heffernan won the general election with 7,502 votes (62.4%) against Republican nominee Eric Taylor.[6]
- In 2014, Heffernan won the general election with 4,496 votes (63.4%) against Republican nominee Kyle Buzzard.[7]
- In 2016, Heffernan was unopposed in the general election and won 9,545 votes.[8]
- In 2018, Heffernan won the general election with 7,073 (65.3%) against Republican nominee Jeffrey Olmstead.[9]
- In 2024, Heffernan won the general election with 8,766 (65.65%) against Republican nominee Michael Krawczuk.[10]
