Mash became fascinated with the [human brain](/source/human_brain) while she was an undergraduate student at [Florida State University](/source/Florida_State_University).<ref name="HWHF"/> After completing a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) degree there, she completed a [Ph.D.](/source/Doctor_of_Science) program at the [Miller School of Medicine](/source/Miller_School_of_Medicine) at the [University of Miami](/source/University_of_Miami), and did a [postdoctoral](/source/postdoctoral) [fellowship](/source/fellowship_(medicine)) at [Harvard Medical School](/source/Harvard_Medical_School)'s [Beth Israel Hospital](/source/Beth_Israel_Deaconess_Medical_Center) in [Boston](/source/Boston), Massachusetts.<ref name="UMHS"/>
