The **dead side-blotched lizard** (***Uta lowei**)*, also known [commonly](/source/Common_name) as the **El Muerto side-blotched lizard** and ***la mancha lateral muerta*** in Mexican Spanish, is a [species](/source/Species) of [lizard](/source/Lizard) in the [subfamily](/source/Subfamily) [Sceloporinae](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sceloporinae&action=edit&redlink=1) of the [family](/source/Family_(taxonomy)) [Phrynosomatidae](/source/Phrynosomatidae). The species is [endemic](/source/Endemism) to [Isla El Muerto](/source/Isla_El_Muerto), an island in the [Gulf of California](/source/Gulf_of_California), Mexico.[1][2]

## Etymology

The [specific name](/source/Specific_name_(zoology)), *lowei*, is in honor of American herpetologist [Charles Herbert Lowe](/source/Charles_Herbert_Lowe).[3]

## Description

*Uta lowei* has strongly keeled [dorsal scales](/source/Dorsal_scales), and is light gray to off-white [ventrally](/source/Anatomical_terms_of_location). Adult males have a [dorsal](/source/Dorsum_(anatomy)) pattern of offset paravertebral dark blotches, with a dense network of turquoise spots.[2]

## Habitat

The preferred natural [habitat](/source/Habitat) of *Uta lowei* is rocky areas of the marine [intertidal zone](/source/Intertidal_zone), but it has also been found in rocky areas of inland [desert](/source/Desert).[1]

## Diet

*Uta lowei* [preys](/source/Predation) predominately upon [isopods](/source/Isopoda).[2]
