'''{{lang|nl|De Gids}}''' (from [Dutch](/source/Dutch_language): ''The Guide'') is the oldest Dutch literary periodical still published today. It was founded in 1837 by [Everhardus Johannes Potgieter](/source/Everhardus_Johannes_Potgieter) and [Christianus Robidé van der Aa](/source/Christianus_Robid%C3%A9_van_der_Aa). Long regarded as the most prestigious literary periodical in the Netherlands, it was considered outdated by the {{lang|nl|[Tachtigers](/source/Tachtigers)}} of the 1880s, who founded {{lang|nl|[De Nieuwe Gids](/source/De_Nieuwe_Gids)}} (''The New Guide'') in opposition to the periodical.

In 1967, [Joke Smit](/source/Joke_Smit)’s essay ''Het onbehagen bij de vrouw''<ref>{{Cite web | url=http://www.emancipatie.nl/_documenten/js/werk/hetonbehagenbijdevrouw/hetonbehagenbijdevrouw.pdf | title=Het Onbehagen bij de Vrouw | language=nl | trans-title=The discomfort in the woman | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180412082405/http://www.emancipatie.nl/_documenten/js/werk/hetonbehagenbijdevrouw/hetonbehagenbijdevrouw.pdf | archive-date=12 April 2018 }}</ref> (''The Discontent of Women'') was published in {{lang|nl|De Gids}}; the publication of this essay is often regarded as the start of the [second wave of feminism](/source/second_wave_of_feminism) in the Netherlands.<ref>{{Cite book |last=Huisman |first=Marijke |title=Transnational Feminism in Non-English Speaking Europe, c.1960-1990 |date=28 December 2024 |publisher=[Palgrave Macmillan](/source/Palgrave_Macmillan) |isbn=978-3-031-69138-6 |pages=135–154}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=https://isgeschiedenis.nl/nieuws/joke-smit-feministe-en-journaliste|title=Joke Smit: feministe en journaliste|date=6 October 2012|publisher=}}</ref>

In 2011, {{lang|nl|De Gids}} ceased operations, but it has been taken over as {{lang|nl|De-Gids-nieuwe-stijl}} (''The-Guide-New-Style'') by {{lang|nl|[De Groene Amsterdammer](/source/De_Groene_Amsterdammer)}}.<ref>{{cite press release|url=https://www.groene.nl/artikel/lancering-de-gids-nieuwe-stijl|title=Lancering De-Gids-nieuwe-stijl|website=De Groene Amsterdammer|date=10 April 2012|access-date=16 June 2020|language=nl}}</ref>

All volumes of ''De Gids'' up to 2012 are published in the [Digital Library for Dutch Literature](/source/Digital_Library_for_Dutch_Literature).<ref name="DBNL">{{cite web |url=https://www.dbnl.org/tekst/_gid001gids01_01/ |title=De Gids |author=<!--Not stated--> |website=dbnl.nl |publisher=Digitale bibliotheek voor Nederlandse letteren |access-date=2017-03-04 }}</ref>
