DavisWiki The DavisWiki website on Thursday, December 13, 2007 Created by Community of Davis, California URL daviswiki.org Commercial Nonprofit Registration Optional Launched June 24, 2004; 22 years ago (2004-06-24)

In 2004, Ivanov and Neustrom started **Davis Wiki**, an experimental project to collect and share local information about the town of [Davis, California](/source/Davis%2C_California), editable by anyone.[1] By 2006, Davis Wiki was one of the largest city wikis, providing its users a guide to a wide range of topics like local businesses, politics and activities.[2] In 2009, [Nieman Lab](/source/Nieman_Lab) called Davis Wiki the world's best local wiki.[1][3]

## Funding

As of 2006, the site relied on donations and fundraising events.[4]

In 2009, Neustrom was planning to incorporate the nonprofit under the name **Wikispot**.[1]

In June 2010, [LocalWiki](/source/LocalWiki) (the organization created by Davis Wiki founders to share their model) won a $350,000 grant from the [Knight News Challenge](/source/John_S._and_James_L._Knight_Foundation) to help build the technology so that other communities could create their own wikis.[5][6]
