# David Stuart MacLean

**David Stuart MacLean** is an American writer. He is the author of *[The Answer to the Riddle Is Me](/source/The_Answer_to_the_Riddle_Is_Me)*, a memoir of his [mefloquine](/source/Mefloquine)-induced delirium and amnesia.[1][2][3][4]

MacLean has a Ph.D. in Literature/Creative Writing from [The University of Houston](/source/University_of_Houston), an M.F.A. from [New Mexico State University](/source/New_Mexico_State_University) and he was a [Fulbright](/source/Fulbright_Program) scholar in India. He won a [PEN/America Center](/source/PEN_American_Center) award in 2011 as the Best Emerging Writer in Non-Fiction.[5] His essays and stories have appeared in *[The New York Times](/source/The_New_York_Times)*,[6] *[The Guardian](/source/The_Guardian)*,[7] [Ploughshares](/source/Ploughshares),[8] [Bennington Review](/source/Bennington_Review),[9] [Guernica](/source/Guernica_(magazine)),[10] and the radio program *[This American Life](/source/This_American_Life)*.[11] MacLean is a visiting faculty member of the creative writing program at the [University of Chicago](/source/University_of_Chicago).[12] He has been a guest on [Duncan Trussell](/source/Duncan_Trussell)'s podcast, *[The Duncan Trussell Family Hour](/source/The_Duncan_Trussell_Family_Hour)*.[13] In 2021, he published the novel *How I Learned to Hate in Ohio* with The Overlook Press.

He lives in Chicago.
