His most notable work has been in [Ethiopia](/source/Ethiopia), particularly on the archaeology of [Aksumite](/source/Kingdom_of_Aksum) sites. He was curator of the [Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge](/source/Museum_of_Archaeology_and_Anthropology%2C_University_of_Cambridge) from 1981 to 2006, and Fellow of [Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge](/source/Gonville_and_Caius_College%2C_Cambridge), 1988–2006.
