'''David John Longhurst''' (15 January 1965 – 8 September 1990) was an English [footballer](/source/association_football). During his career, he played for [Nottingham Forest](/source/Nottingham_Forest_F.C.), [Halifax Town](/source/Halifax_Town_A.F.C.), [Northampton Town](/source/Northampton_Town_F.C.), [Peterborough United](/source/Peterborough_United_F.C.) and [York City](/source/York_City_F.C.). He died on the pitch during a match for York City against [Lincoln City](/source/Lincoln_City_F.C.) in 1990.

==Career==
[Northampton](/source/Northampton)-born Longhurst was a pacy striker who began his career in [Nottingham Forest](/source/Nottingham_Forest_F.C.)'s youth team under the management of [Brian Clough](/source/Brian_Clough) in the early 1980s, and received a permanent contract in 1983. However, he never played a first team game for Forest, and joined [Halifax Town](/source/Halifax_Town_A.F.C.) in the [Fourth Division](/source/Football_League_Fourth_Division) on a free transfer in 1985. He was a regular goalscorer at the club, scoring 24 goals in 85 league appearances, although it wasn't enough to turn the [West Yorkshire](/source/West_Yorkshire) club into promotion contenders. After two seasons at Halifax, he joined his hometown club [Northampton Town](/source/Northampton_Town_F.C.) in 1987.

After one season at Northampton, Longhurst was signed by [Peterborough United](/source/Peterborough_United_F.C.) in 1988, scoring a hat-trick in a 3–3 draw with [Gillingham](/source/Gillingham_F.C.) in the [FA Cup](/source/FA_Cup) first round at [Priestfield Stadium](/source/Priestfield_Stadium) on 19 November that year. Peterborough won the replay 1–0.<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.theposhtrust.co.uk/museum/match-reports/the-fa-cup/gillingham-v-peterborough-utd-1st-rd-19-nov-88 |title=Gillingham v Peterborough Utd 1st Rd 19 Nov 88 |access-date=31 August 2018 |work=The Posh Supporters Trust |archive-date=31 August 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180831141230/http://www.theposhtrust.co.uk/museum/match-reports/the-fa-cup/gillingham-v-peterborough-utd-1st-rd-19-nov-88 |url-status=dead }}</ref>

He joined [York City](/source/York_City_F.C.) in March 1990. In the third match of the [1990–91](/source/1990-91_in_English_football) season against [Lincoln City](/source/Lincoln_City_F.C.), Longhurst suffered a heart attack on the pitch, and was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital. He was the first player to die in a [Football League](/source/The_Football_League) match in 63 years; the previous on-pitch death in a Football League match was [Bury](/source/Bury_F.C.) defender [Sam Wynne](/source/Sam_Wynne) in 1927. The subsequent inquest into Longhurst's death revealed that he suffered from a rare heart condition.<ref>{{cite news |title=Longhurst Inquest |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-northamptonshire-17431949 |first=Elinor |last=Cross |date=21 March 2012 |access-date=27 October 2019 |work=[BBC News Online](/source/BBC_News_Online) |publisher=[BBC News](/source/BBC_News) |agency=[BBC](/source/BBC)}}</ref>

York City later named one of the refurbished stands at the [Bootham Crescent](/source/Bootham_Crescent) stadium after him.
