Born near [Hammonville](/source/Hammonville%2C_Kentucky), [Hart County, Kentucky](/source/Hart_County%2C_Kentucky), Smith attended the public schools and the colleges at [Horse Cave](/source/Horse_Cave%2C_Kentucky), [Leitchfield](/source/Leitchfield%2C_Kentucky), and [Hartford, Kentucky](/source/Hartford%2C_Kentucky).
He studied law.
He was [admitted to the bar](/source/Admission_to_the_bar_in_the_United_States) in 1876 and commenced practice in [Hodgenville, Kentucky](/source/Hodgenville%2C_Kentucky).
