# David Hawtin

**David Christopher Hawtin** (born 7 June 1943) was the fourth [Bishop of Repton](/source/Bishop_of_Repton) from 1999 to 2006;[1] and from then on an [assistant bishop](/source/Assistant_bishop) within the [Diocese of Sheffield](/source/Diocese_of_Sheffield).

## Early life and education

Hawtin was born on 7 June 1943.[2] He was educated at [Keble College, Oxford](/source/Keble_College,_Oxford).

## Ordained ministry

Hawtin was [ordained](/source/Ordained) in 1967. He began his career with [curacies](/source/Curate) in [North East England](/source/North_East_England), including at [St Peter's Church, Stockton-on-Tees](/source/St_Peter's_Church,_Stockton-on-Tees).[3] After this, he was: [Priest in charge](/source/Priest_in_charge) of St Andrew's, [Gateshead](/source/Gateshead);[4] [Rector](/source/Rector_(ecclesiastical)) of [Washington, Tyne and Wear](/source/Washington,_Tyne_and_Wear); and finally, before his elevation to the [episcopate](/source/Episcopate), [Archdeacon of Newark](/source/Archdeacon_of_Newark) from 1992 to 1999. After 7 years as the [suffragan bishop](/source/Suffragan_bishop) of the [Diocese of Derby](/source/Diocese_of_Derby), he retired to [Sheffield](/source/Sheffield) in 2006.
