He grew up in [Reinøya](/source/Rein%C3%B8ya_(Troms)) near Tromsø, then moved to [Follebu](/source/Follebu) at the age of nine and [Lillehammer](/source/Lillehammer) three years later. ==Club career==
David Hanssen played at [Stabæk](/source/Stab%C3%A6k_Fotball) for 4 seasons. He was later purchased by [Strømsgodset](/source/Str%C3%B8msgodset_IF), later by [Vålerenga](/source/V%C3%A5lerenga_Fotball) ahead of the 2002 season. He had a good spell, but injuries to his knee put his career at Vålerenga on hold. After one season in [Start](/source/IK_Start), he played five season for [Hønefoss](/source/H%C3%B8nefoss_BK).

In 2012, Hanssen returned to his former club Stabæk. He made his re-debut for Stabæk on the opening day of the [Norwegian Premier League](/source/Norwegian_Premier_League) season against [Aalesund](/source/Aalesunds_FK) on 24 March 2012.
