## Background and education

Born in 1959 at the [London Hospital](/source/London_Hospital) to [surgeon](/source/Surgeon), Philip Chalk (1930–2015) and Jean *née* Doughty,[2] Chalk was educated at [Chigwell School](/source/Chigwell_School) then [Radley College](/source/Radley_College), before going up to the [University of Edinburgh](/source/University_of_Edinburgh) where he read [Agricultural Sciences](/source/Agricultural_Sciences) ([BSc](/source/BSc)).[3]

## Career

With [WPP](/source/WPP_plc) from 1982 to 1995 as director of marketing at the [Henley Centre for Forecasting](/source/Henley_Business_School), Chalk then joined [City](/source/City_of_London) [think-tank](/source/Think-tank), Future Foundation[4] as [marketing partner](/source/Partnership), before in 2003 becoming [director of strategy & research](/source/Chief_strategy_officer) at [Age Concern Enterprises](/source/Age_Concern).[5]

[Founding managing director](/source/Organizational_founder) of Windrush Care since 2015,[6] a [home care](/source/Home_care) [agency](/source/Employment_agency),[7] Chalk was elected to the [board of directors](/source/Board_of_directors) of [the Homecare Association](/source/The_Homecare_Association) (UKHCA) in 2017, representing smaller home care businesses.[8]

## Charitable service

Joining the [Worshipful Company of Drapers](/source/Worshipful_Company_of_Drapers) in 1982, Chalk became a [Liveryman](/source/Livery_company#Liverymen) in 1986, being elected a [Court Assistant](/source/Court_of_assistants) in 2008, before serving as Master Draper for 2021/22.[9]

Elected as [City Lay Sheriff](/source/Sheriff_of_the_City_of_London) for 2024/25, Chalk was previously Governor of two Drapers' Company schools [Thomas Adams School](/source/Thomas_Adams_School), [Wem](/source/Wem) in [Shropshire](/source/Shropshire) and [Howell's School](/source/Howell's_School,_Llandaff) in [Llandaff](/source/Llandaff) and Chairman of the [Thomas Howell Education Fund](/source/Thomas_Howell_(merchant)) for [North Wales](/source/North_Wales).[10]

In 2025, Chalk was appointed [MStJ](/source/MStJ).[11]

## Family

David Chalk married Miranda Passey in 1985, and lives in Gloucestershire. He has two younger sisters.

Of [matrilineal](/source/Matrilineal) [Scottish descent](/source/Scottish_descent), their father was Dr Philip Chalk, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at the Royal Free Hospital, who served as [Master Draper](/source/Drapers'_Company) for 1981/82.
